266fsb Athlon@200mhz?

Hey all...

I have an older system with a 700duron on a ka7-raid board; I want to put a 1.4 athlon on it, but of course I waited too long in my upgrade cycle, and now the only 1.4/200's left are $$$. I'd rather not go used. Q is, if cpu is unlocked, is there anything keeping me from running a newer 266fsb@200? (I'll have to jack up the multiplier to get it around 1.4G...of course, in the course of things, the fsb will get up over 200 as well )

Is this doable? What are the consequences? Will the old methods (been out of it for a while) of unlocking the socketA's still work?

I have the exact same problem like you do, the cheapest one they have on stock is $160 @ memory for less. Anyways, during one of my post where I was asking for a used one if they have one to sell, someone replied that the 266 should work, all you need to do is adjust the multiplier from 10.5 to 14, of course he said this is just his theory and he have not actually tried it. Around 3 people replied to my post all saying the same thing, but they didn't elaborate, well, let me know if you hear anything. here's my email amaretto3737@juno.com

I believe I have the answer, thanks to DuronClocker over at Hardware Central, this is how it goes.
Just get the 1.4 GHz 266 FSB (10.5*133) and you get 1.4 GHz, but then your mobo only supports 200 FSB so if you plug in the cpu, you'd only get 1050 MHz, what you do is you just adjust the multiplier from 10.5 to 14 and presto, you'll have a 1.4 GHz 200 FSB Thunderbird, DuronClocker mentioned that most thunderbirds are factory unlocked, but if they're locked just do the pencil trick. I'm getting one tonite, hopefully your mobo has multiplier jumpers. By the way, you mentioned that your FSB will go up when you adjust the multiplier, it won't, as long as you only adjust the CPU multiplier and not the FSB bus, just leave the FSB at default, w/c is 200.
