Although SB does offer a lot of performance compared to AMD's current offerings, without the appropriate use or software you might not even notice any difference. It is not as apparent of a difference like going from a HDD to a SSD. It is a lot more cheaper to get BD as you only need to change the CPU but to go SB now you would need to spend more as you need to change the CPU and the motherboard.

Since you already have most of the parts of an AMD build, you could wait for another 2 months to get BD. Not too sure whether your motherboards supports it because the name that you gave is too brief. Check the link below to see if your motherboard supports BD with a BIOS update.

Your CPU is pretty fast, I'd wait for the BD, check benchmarks then decide if you wanna jump to intel's bandwagon.

I am not really sure as to whether there will be a BIOS update for your motherboard yet because your motherboard doesn't seem to be listed but who knows a few months after Asus might release a BIOS update for your to reuse your current motherboard.

Your CPU is adequate for most consumer level applications and I don't think it is necessary to upgrade it in a hurry. In 2 months time I think you can decide better as BD will come out and we will see if it is any good. If it is good you can go with BD, if it is not as good as expected then you can go with SB which by then should be cheaper than what you are going to pay now as they will reduce the price to compete with BD.

Leave it, wait for bulldozer at the very least.

Not only is BD coming but so is intels Z68 chipset.

So wait for both of those and reviews.

Melanie,

What do you mean you didn't get any sound advice and all you got was down play? o_O You asked if you should buy a SB or wait for Bulldozer. Everyone said you should wait for Bulldozer and see how it compares with Sandy Bridge. If you want to go somewhere else because that wasn't what you wanted to hear then so be it. But you asked for advice and they gave it to you.

Unless you feel you NEED more cpu performance right now, I wouldn't replace a Phenom II X4, especially if you haven't tried overclocking yet. The wise move would be to wait for Bulldozer(should be out in June), and see both how it performs and how it effects current Sandy Bridge pricing, because you'll probably get more for your money in 2 months time.

Honestly Bulldozer is right around the corner (probably within a few months).... wait... also 7000 series of AMD cards might only be 3-4 months or so away.

The jump from 40nm -> 28nm is a big one, unless you need 480 sli and 2600k atm, id just stick with the 965 BE you have, and whatever GPU.

arkadrel is spot on....alot of changes in 2 months time coming z68, bulldozer....new SB cpu's later in the year...your current setup is a monster and will do what u need it to till the smoke clears with bulldozer's release....SB is a great setup and we are hopeing bulldozer will be great too and hopefully drive prices down a bit.....if you just cant wait then SB is the way to go....even if bulldozer is faster in some ways its still not going to bury SB...buying SB would not be a mistake at all....Im an amd guy at heart but ive never seen a rig like i have chew up anything i throw at it at amazing speeds....my first intel rig for myself since building computers since 1996, all amd...intel is awsome but expensive especially for unlocked cpu's....amd more affordable...to be honest the difference between my old 955be that i came from to this 17 920 is jaw dropping performance...

Not quite sure what the deal is with people wanting to spend their money so badly. Tech forums are full of 'em.

I'd expect that if there is going to be a 28nm part soonish, it would be a low-volume "pipecleaner" part, like 4770. Mass-market 28nm should be at least 6 months away.

the people I suspect generally only come to a tech forum (any of them) when they feel the need to upgrade (marketing/advertisers working well or the old system is dieing) and want to be sure they are not being tricked into buying last years gear at new hardware prices.

Lot of tech regulars that full-well know they aren't being tricked that do the same thing. It is like they have an imperative: "MUST SPEND CASH."

I'm still on a 955 BE @ 3.6 Ghz and I really don't feel any need to upgrade. I game and do some audio and video encoding, but nothing serious enough to require more CPU horsepower. The PH II's are not the fastest chips out there, but for most purposes they are "fast enough".

A 965BE should be fast enough for most tasks even a poweruser throws at it. If the plan is to go SLI, and you need a new mainboard, wait for Bulldozer. Surely a 965BE + single GTX480 could get you through till june
