2600+ M vs A64 (754) [help a n00b out]

Well, I'm about to build another system, but really confused as to which setup to go with.

With the 2600+ M and the DFI Lanparty board, I'm sure I can get a nice setup.

However, upgrading to the A64 2800+ or even 3000+ isn't that much more and I like the new DFI UT board that came out...

I'm just weary about socket 754 now that 939 is out. For one thing, I know that 754 requires ECC memory and don't have dual channel setup, right?

I wanted to buy 2x512mb and use that as a dual-channel. How much more is ECC and if I decide to upgrade to 939 later, can I still use my ECC memory on that board? Does ECC affect speed at all?

Secondly, is having a 64-bit chip really that advantageous right now since there are really no mainstream 64-bit apps?

Third, can I OC my A64 chip to high speeds? I try to follow Anandtech's mid-level buyers guide (and thier new overclocker's guide), but still not sure if I want to go into 64.

Can anyone convince me to buy the A64 chip over the XP?

IIRC, Socket 940 is ECC, 754 is standard DDR.

AS for the convincing on a performance basis, read here and decide if the gain is worth it to you.

Oh sorry. But I heard that 754 requires some special type of memory... not just a regular chip... Is it buffered?

Yes. 754 uses the exact same memory as a socket A system. Good old, nonECC unbuffered. Which is about 95% of the ram you'll see for sale.

940 is the only amd socket type that requires Any special ram. And that is ECC Registered.

Oh, ok, well nevermind then... I don't know why I thought 754 boards required different kind of memory.

Thx, that review helped. I guess overall the A64 chips are just better then a highly oc'd 2600+ M. I guess I'll just go with an A64 754 chip!

So, the only disadvantage 754 has over the 939 is

1) long-term upgradability
2) Dual-channel memory support

That's it right?

Well I didn't see much discussion to try and convince you to go A64 over AXP. Even though you seem to be sure as of now that you want to go A64 over AXP, just use your own logic to help you make your decision. You're only worried about the A64 because of Socket 939 replacing 754 and are considering a mobile XP because you know it will be good. Well certainly AXP is a dead end line, and even if 754 is dead end in the near future its still clearly faster than AXP, not to forget A64's overclock nearly as well as mobile XPs, not to forget there is always mobile A64s that the new Socket 754 DFI board can run 😉
