2600+ 266mhz or 333mhz question

I have an Asus nForce 1 mb and just ordered a 2600+ 266mhz from Amazon. They sent me the 333mhz version instead. Will this work on a 266mhz bus motherboard? I assume it will, but dont want to try it and break anything by trying it.

Thanks!

I don't know anything about the board you have, but if your ram can handle the 166fsb and your motherboard allows you to adjust the multiplier, there shouldn't be any problems.

What brand RAM is it? You would be overclocking your RAM to pc2700 at 166fsb.

its Mustek ram I believe. The default jumper setting is set for 133:133mhz. Wouldnt I just leave it at that? I am currently running an 1800+ on this mb.

You could run the processor at 133fsb but you would be underclocking it. Does your BIOS have any FSB adjustments, or is it just by jumpers? I looked on the Asus website, but all it said was 100/133 (200/266)FSB.

you can try increasing the multipliers and dropping the fsb. the setting for the 2600+ 266 fsb i believe is 16 x 133 =2133MHz

If I recall correctly, the A7N266-VM had no overclocking capabilities. But I am not certain of that as I never owned it. Just word of mouth.
If thats true, send the CPU back to amazon for a replacement being they sent you the wrong CPU. If you memory can run at the 166fsb and you have overclocking capabilities to get past the 133fsb. Just keep the cpu.

I honestly dont care if it is underclocked. I just want it to run as what I bought and not what I received. I was just wondering if the 333mhz processor will run ok on a 266mhz board. If not, I will have to send back the cpu. I know AMD has both versions of this chip and just wanted the 266. If the 333 will work thats great. At least it gives me a better upgrade path for when I upgrade my mb.

Thanks for all your help!

If you run it at 266, it will not be running at the rated speed that it is supposed to run.

The motherboard will let you bump up the FSB.

Increase it by 5 mhz every week until it locks up a lot more than you can tolerate.
