260 1GHz celerons - RC5 for now...<UPDATED>

Hi,

I am currently involved in rolling out 260 1GHz Celereon PC's (Win98SE) and want to add them to TeamAnandTech, I am installing the DNET client on them at the moment and configuring it for RC5 using my PC as the gateway with the pproxy running 24/7. My reason being that I can use the DNETC.scr to display a 'normal' screensaver and run the client in the background. I would be quite keen to use 50% and do SETI if I can do the same sort of thing. Can anyone help?

brand new and imaging the harddrives, or are they on a network?

I think our RC5 team would kick butt that kind of power.. Maybe even
reclaim #1..

The SETI team took a recent loss with two big guns having to stop running the client at work.. maybe you could direct a few that way too? The FlexInstaller would have a field day with those assimilations if they're on a network :)

Whatever you choose, I'm grinning like the cat that ate the canary :D

<edit> Just realized they are win98se boxes.. So RC5 would indeed run more transparent on those systems. The win98 Service install is good, but at startup you notice SETI loading... With that kind of firepower, you could even help ECCP take over #1 from the Dutch.. hehe Solve the silly thing in 3 weeks :p

<edit2> If your apt to the screensaver versions, SETI has one that will run nicely in the background. You don't quite get the same efficiency, but even 50 of those would give you around 180-220 WUs/day.. up in the top 5 :)

Take a look at the Duplexing Screen Saver (hosted on my website), i will put up some information on it soon :)

Basically, it allows you to display any screensaver you want, and to run any program in to background.

You could split the computers 50/50, all using this program.

Have a look at my website and there are some basic instructions on how to set up the Seti CLI (not using SetiDriver)

If you need any help with the Seti side, PM me and i'll help with whatever you need help with :)

Thanks RigorousT and ConfusedBW

Can I setup a SETI proxy on my PC much like the PProxy for RC5? ConfusedBW at the end of your site is: TeAm Proxies - More WU caching and stats. I assume that this is what I need? Bsically my PC has an open Internet connection with ZoneAlarm as a firewall. The rest of the PC's can only see the LAN. The RC5 client works as far as I can tell - upto 12.4MKeys/sec (about 20 pc's) :D

I have not had much experience with SETI so it might take a week or two to get it online.

GO TA!

This sounds like a great idea to me. My 1 computer does 6 or so a day, so I can only imagine the amount generated by 100!

Yes, you can set up a proxy like pproxy, it's called "SetiQueue".

I have not got round to writing up the instructions for SetiQueue, but PM me and i'll guide you through it if you want to do it before i manage to write it up :)

RigorousT - sorry should have answered your question - they are built using a Win98SE unattended install over the network. We have some other management software that then installs all the apps assigned to each PC.

seems you're pretty adept with pproxy so setiqueue shouldn't be too difficult for you to adapt.. & CBW will get you started.

you will want to setup SetiQ on your open connection server and point all the installs to that IP. If it's not static, you will probably want to get a dyn2go service...

the great thing about Shux/Bot's TeAm FlexInstaller is that it will setup the CLI over your network and point them to your setiQ real easy. Shux can probably jump in and advise you better..

Exciting to hear your recent good fortune, BartManInNZ.. be sure you have the right authorization, preferably in writing.. Other than that, man oh man.. Gonna enjoy watching you climb the ranks in both projects..

Cool, great to hear that :)

Just yell at me if you need any help :)

I'm in the process of writing some step-by-step instructions on SetiQueue :)

If u place 100 PC's on RC5, 100 on Seti, can u lend us a 60 PC's hand on ECCp...

where in a hot battle trying to keep nº 2 from TechIMO and begin to catch the Dutch Power Cows that currently hold 1st spot...

the current stats for these three teams is:

1 Dutch Power Cows.....2560183
2 Team Anandtech........1437831
3 TechIMO.....................1420130

With 60 Celerons we could probably add 3000 DP's a day.

I think what nagger is suggesting sounds like a good idea :)

Then, when ECCp is finished, then you can move them 60 over to Seti, RC5 or both :)

ECCp-109 hasn't nothing to do with DNET (I guess)

Read the FAQ in my sig, since I can't explain to u what ECCp-109 is better than kmmatney (the TA member that wrote the FAQ).

It will answer your questions...

this sounds great BartMan! welcome to the team! I'm glad that you have enough firepower that you can help out all of these projects. if you get 100 boxes running seti 24/7, you'll be in the top 1% of all seti users in about six days!

...sigh...

i wish i had that kind of power...

The TA duplexing screen saver works well with the ECCp client, but I need to change the code a little bit so it works with the SETI Cli using SETIDriver. I am the author of the code. However someone did report a problem using the screen saver in Win98 and I haven't have time to investigate it yet. I've been using it for months on Win2000 and Win NT systems. It does work fine on the only Win98SE machine I've installed it on at work.

ECCp doesn't need a gateway, or even an internet connection. It does not connect to the internet to retrieve work, but generates its own workload when its installed and first run. You need to be a little careful when installing on multiple machines so they do not produce indentical work. Just do not copy over the "plist" file and you will be fine. You can have each client send in its own work through the internet (easiest), or collect the dplist files from each computer and send in the work centrally. Installing ECCp is just a matter of copying over about 5 files (and installing the duplexing screen saver).

Well, you've heard it straight from the horse's mouth ;) (no offence meant kmmatney :))

I also experienced that problem on my mum's computer, but that did only have 64MB ram, so i thought it was because of that.

Maybe if you need to install Seti as only a screensaver then the GUI will work, or you can always install the CLI and SetiDriver on them, or you can use the FlexInstaller (will drag up a link in a minute and write a little about it on my page)

BartManInNZ the beauty of ECCP is that it doesn't need work units to run. It generates it's own work load based on a formula.. you send your results over http port I believe.. so you don't need a proxy and the result files are almost nothing, like 2kb, right fellas?

here's the FAQ for the client

Bot or someone might be able to suggest how to best go about a network install of the client. There's even an enhanced client for each cpu.

OK for now I will run with RC5 until I get sometime to sort out ECCp and SETI properly - in about a weeks time.

Cheers for all the help - I will be in touch if I have troubles.

Meanwhile keep cracking!
