saw one online for cheap with free shipping but it doesn't state the rec. size. Is this too big a bike for someone ~5'9 and I won't be using it for mountain biking, just light exercise

don't get a cheap bike...you will regret it...avoid the $100-$150 Huffy's and Target/Walmart bikes like the plague...

Go ride one of these bikes and then go to a 'Real' bike store and try one of their bikes...you will see the difference...

I was riding on a cheapo $99 Target bike...once I got my Kona (got it on clearance for $350 a few years ago), the difference was night and day...

Good luck...

5' 9", I say a 18" frame should do it. But go to a good bike store. They will find a bike for you in your price range and make sure it fits you right. Makes a huge difference in ride comfort.
