It depends on what kind of game you play I guess. I have seen some crazy people scream about ghosting on newer 12ms displays, but they have mouse sensitivity set to super high in games like CS:Source.

If you play slower paced games like RPGs its probably ok.

I think Ill wait until a newer gen of LCDs comes around...I feel that my 19" CRT is getting blurry specially when reading text...So what should I do? Dual monitors? Or just spend a lot more on a 12ms Samsung 172x second hand?

There are a bunch of 16ms (and some 12ms I hear...my Dell 2005fpw says 12 and 16, so no sure what it counts as). In my case I don't notice ghosting at whatever ms my Dell really runs at, but I just play HL2, Farcry, Morrowind, or NWN. But, even on this I heard one guy complain about CS w/mouse sensitivity set to high.

I dont notice any ghosting in HL2, CS:S, Warcraft 3 etc. on my Samsung 213T. Only game with some ghosting is Unreal Tornament 2k4.

Why don't you try and see for yourself in a store?
Ghosting is highly subjective... If you want my opinion yes 25ms is creating ghosting. 16ms is debatable for me.

Hikari I believe 2005FPW is 16ms from black to white. 12ms is from grey to grey.

I am not a gaming fanatic and use a 19in Envision 9110 lcd 25ms response rate seems ok..I do see some ghosting but when I compared to my crt the overall image was so much better it was no big deal...also a better videocard helped as well when i pushed to native 1280x1024x32...my 9700pro was not as good as 6800oc on HL2

Yeah, but I think most people just report their black to black... I can't find any good references unfortunately.

Great monitor though, I don't notice ghosting, but I'm not an uber FPS player. hehe

I'm sure it is... I found 2001FP the only competent big LCD for my tastes regarding ghosting, and I imagine 2005 should be the same if not better.

I have never noticed any ghosting on my 16ms. My friend complains about ghosting on his 25ms Samsung in high contrast web forums.

I saw it. When you scroll with the mouse at the EQ2 forms (orange and black mostly) it would give you a headache in minutes. I know you were probably being sarcastic, but it was a real problem, more noticable than any game.

i agree
although the image looks nice, movements can be fast in fps games and such
12ms is said to be noticeably better and have less ghosting

It completely depends on the user and the panel. I have a 21" CRT and a 15" Sony LCD. I use the LCD for lan parties. All we play are FPS like UT2K4, BF 1942, and SW: Battlefront. NEVER noticed ghosting and my response rate is 25ms. I have shown it to gamer friends who complain about ghosting on their own 16ms panels and they don't see any.

Now maybe it is just too small to notice, but my eyes are pretty sensitive... Like others said, try it out in the store. Many times they have demos installed that you can play.

Just my $.02

I have a Samsung SyncMaster 710T 12ms DVI (basically a 172X but better) sitting here right in front of me. This monitor is awesome for gaming.. you just have to get used to the effects of ghosting..which I did after literally 2 days. NO, it's NOT as fast as a CRT, but YES, it is usable for gaming, certainly. I play Wolfenstein every day on this thing and would consider myself a hardcore gamer. Some tips: Limit your in-game FPS accordingly (you can in most games). In my opinion here are some good values:

RESPONSE TIME    MAXFPS LIMIT

8 ms                           80
12 ms                         65
16 ms                         50

For some reason, VSync DISABLED helps the effect of it too but I don't know the scientific reason why. It does for me anyway.

This will dramatically reduce the effects of ghosting. The 710T also has 4 preset MagicBright options: Custom, Text, Internet, Entertain. I recommend the Internet setting if you want the warmth of a CRT but the visibility and brightness of an LCD. You can also tweak R,G,B individually either on this monitor or in your display drivers (gamma). More red will make it look warmer and warmer until it gets to near CRT level. Just some pointers if you are migrating from a CRT to LCD to 'ease the pain'. ;) Oh, and no, I would not recommend a 25 ms for gaming; at least a 16 ms should suffice. Not only would I not recommend it because it's not fast enough, but typically that's the speed you find on cheaper panels that have other bad characteristics. This isn't true for all monitors though.

Um 16 ms gives you 62.5 frames per sec viewable. And it may not directly have anything to do with frame rate but if all pixel transitions are being made in 16 ms or less then 62.5 frames per second is the maximum amount of frames that can be viewed without ghosting.
