256MB vs. 512MB? Why would you add this much more ram for?

yeah, CAD and 3D intensive stuff could benefit from large amounts of RAM, but as of now, it's so cheap, the question i think is why not = )

hosting a couple of servers. Diablo 2 :Q

Photoshop, and opening lots of apps at once 🙂

Setting up my super ProE box this weekend, 1.2ghz Athlon with 512mb ram woohoo!!! Well I realize it's not that super, but on a student's budget it's about as super as I can get.

So... here is the plan...

I am going to bring the 128mb Hyndai PC133 to Komet leaving 256mb of the Crucial in Epsilon. I was wondering should I buy another stick of 256mb Crucial or is it a waste?

Considering it only costs $89.24, no it's not a waste.

Editing large files, such as video and sound files. It is much better to have the source and desingation (and temp.) files all reside in main memory (the cpu L1 cache would be better, but back to the real world of 2001, no hard drive space odyssey) to avoid using the hard drive to store things on a short term basis.

i just pulled 256mb out of my system and there seems to be a big difference w/ swapfile access. seems like they are more frequent and they take longer (writing a bigger swap file maybe?). i don't think it made this much of a difference when i was running windows98 but it seems to make a big difference in windows 2000.
