256mb or memory in a 128mb slot?

I am upgrading a HP 6460 computer for a friend..As part of the upgrade im adding more memory to support the XP OS upgrade. The tech. specs on this system calls for a max. of 256mb of memory. System has 2 memory slots and the max. recommend memory stick size is 128mb. I just dropped a 256 mb stick in bank 0 and upon boot i went into setup and it reports 0 memory in the system....however..the computer runs fine and XP knows that there is 256mb of memory install..So the question is...should i be concerend that the bios is not smart enough to know how much memory is installed?

I'd trust two 128 megs over the one 256. You probably aren't going to hurt anything, but I would be concerned with stability and reliability. You could chance it and see if it stays stable, but if it starts crashing and corrupts data, how patient is your friend going to be while you fix it.

RedBeard...your logic is hard to argue against..i just had this stick laying around was has hoping to Save a little $ in the upgrade and use it.

Did u try sticking that piece of memory into the other slot and then check what
the BIOS reports ????
Some mobos are slot specific for memory
hey .. just a thought
