Hi,

Is there maybe someone who knows more about the release date of the nVidia 8600GTS with 256bit 512 Mb Memory ?

I highly doubt nVidia is going to release any new midrange parts anytime soon. If the HD 2600XT outperformed the 8600GTS, we'd see nVidia with a new card, likely. However, it is not faster and nVidia has no reason to launch a new card.

I think the next time you are going to see a new release from nVidia is with the GeForce 9 series, and we've still got a few months (at least) until that comes. There's simply no market (except for the extreme low-end, perhaps) that nVidia is not doing well in with its current lineup.

Haven't people realized by now that the 8600GTS needs more SPs and ROPs, not a 256-bit bus. Of course, if Nvidia doubled its the SPs and ROPs, the card would be come dangerously close to 8800gts performance in certain areas. Now if they could find a way to increase the bus to 256-bit cheaply, then they would do that just so they could deceive all the people who think a 256-bit bus is actually useful for a card with 32 SPs.

It does well in the 2400/2600 review, often beating the x1950pro.

What the 8600gts really needs is more shader units. If it weren't for the architectural efficiency of the g80 design, the 32 SPs would have a hard time beating a x850xt, never mind a 1950pro. 512mb on that card is a marketing gimmick, and a 256-bit bus would be a waste of money.

The card would also reach the 7900 Series level of production cost give or take with a die size likely either equal or greater then G71, this is the main problem this generation, just not enough transistor budget to work with. In the end, concessions needed to be made.

Agreed, unfortunately production costs prohibited that.
