I've looked at some benchmarks of WoW, and even a GTX580 was only pushing 60FPS with 8xAA and all the goodies turned on at 2560x1600.

My GT445m 740qm xpx17 will sit at 60fps 99% of the time with these settings, ok that is at 720p but i just don't believe a GTX580 got these results unless you are talking about it being pinned at 60fps 100% of the time with vsync on. WOW really isnt that demanding even with everything turned up to maximum unless things have drastically changed in the last 4 months since i quit.

I'd like to hear how the Samsung 305T compares to the Dell U3011, as I have a Samsung 305T Plus version.

I think the plus version has HDCP and a wider color gamut, but thats it. From what I've read, the S-PVA panels have better contrast ratio and lower temps than the S-IPS monitors, but the S-IPS monitors have wider viewing angles.

Anyway, I love my monitor. I'm going to be sad when it inevitably fails one day :'(

I have been running the U3011 now for just under a week, and as far as I can tell, they are pretty close.

The Dell actually runs a lot cooler than the Samsung (you can feel the heat radiating off of it, cant with the dell). Viewing angles are similar. The Samsung does have a brighter backlight, I noticed that right off the bat. I cannot detect any input lag in the Dell, and notice no difference with gaming between it and the Samsung either. The scaler and OSD are very nice though, which is a welcome edition. I really wish the memory card reader on the dell supported compact flash, but since the Samsung did not have any memory card reader at all, I can't complain too much.

Hi guys,

I thought I'd just bump this thread instead of creating a new one.

I'm looking to upgrade my 5850 to a 6970 (eyeing the MSI Lightning mainly for its reputed quietness) for more acceptable fps at this resolution.

I'm torn on whether I should wait for the HD7000 cards or just pull the trigger now. I'm playing Deus Ex: HR atm and the HD5850 copes comfortably at this resolution with most of the eyecandy turned on. I don't expect to be as lucky with most other games though (DA2 and Crysis 2, for example).

Thanks.

Sorry for the thread hijack, but I'm curious as to what people would rather have (if they cannot have both)

1. A good non-ips monitor with 120hz display
2. A good IPS monitor (like the U3011)

Some people say once they use a 120hz display there is no going back. Some people also say the same about IPS monitors. So which is more valued?

I'd take an IPS panel over a 120hz display any day. Honestly, games are fine on most TN panels, the days of input lag on modern TN panels is long gone. Even my old LG 23" plays games fine and there is absolutely no ghosting or lag.

Once you see a good IPS display its tough to go back. Its really that much better. My main qualm is that some of the 27" IPS panels have such aggressive AG coatings that it is somewhat distracting, especially the dell U2711.

Like I've posted already in this thread.

I have both, a 23" TN 120hz 1080 (3d vision too) and a Dell u3011. They sit side by side on my desk. They are both fantastic and both have an upper hand over the other one. I really don't think I could really say one is my favorite. I'll switch back and forth between them depending on my mood. Sometimes a game needs 120hz (actually all do ;)...) to feel good, sometimes 3d, and sometimes I just want massive 2560x1600.

I do have to agree... the AG coating sucks on large monitors. I hated it on my 3007wfp-HC and while less intrusive on the U3011, I still hate it.

I have actually been looking for an IPS with a glossy screen but not have been able to find one. Is anyone aware if one even exists? (other than Apple, I am not interested in giving my $$ to Apple).

I just got 2 GTx 580's... and am using a i7 920 @ 2.6-2.8 ghz. I think you ar eright because my 3dmark11 score was pertty low... only about 9700k

I am going to try overclocking it to 4 ghz at least until socket 2011 comes out I guess.

All I will say is, mo GPUs, mo problems :whiste: Mark my words, if you get the tri/quad fire set up, you will regret it.

And HardOCP's reviews are suspect imo. They favor AMD in a subtle manner by jacking up the settings to ridiculous levels and calling it "playable," and then using under clocked CPUs in their test rigs.

They were caught out on that when they tried that same tri-fire set up against a tri-SLi 580s using the same 3.6ghz CPU, and of course, the results favored the AMD rig because Nvidia GPUs require more brute CPU power, presumably due to higher driver overhead.

After the outcry, they went and retested with a much faster CPU, and of course, the Tri-SLi 580s mopped the floor with the tri-fire one.

Personally, I wouldn't even run 580 SLi without a Core i7 clocked to at least 4.0ghz...even at 2560x1600 :colbert:

And funnily enough, since they swapped out their test rig for the SB @ 4.8ghz, Nvidia now does better in their benchmarks go figure..
