250Gb WD hard drive only recognized as 138Gb

I just put together a new rig:

ASUS A8N-SLI Deluxe
Antec NeoPower ATX 480W Power Supply atx 12v v2.0
AMD Athlon 64 3700+ San Diego
OCZ EL Platinum Revision 2 1GB (2 x 512MB)
Western Digital Caviar RE WD2500SD 250GB 7200 RPM Serial ATA150
BFG 7800 GTX OC 256Mb

When I installed windows for the first time my blank 250 Gb hard drive only showed up as being 138 Gb. When I boot up the drive is correctly recognized on the boot screen but then in Windows it will still only show 138. Has anyone had this type of problem before?

1. search
2. you need at least service pack 1a + to see the whole thing..

install service pack 2 and goto admin tools and computer management and disk management to add the additional space

In disk managment - I see that I can partition the unused space as a new drive. Is there any easy way to just add it to the existing drive?

You can format it as a new partition, not a new drive. If your talking about adding it to the C: partition then you'll have to extend the partition with a app like Partition Magic.

Get SP2, and your drive will appear as 250GB.

Although after you install SP2 you will have to go into local disk management and partition that extra amount of space otherwise it won't show up, it isn't automatic.

It will if you slipstream SP2 onto your Windows install CD for the next time 🙂.
