Hello I need to add some storage to my linux fileserver box which is ruing somewhat older hardware.

the motherboard is a gigabyte slot A runing a 800mhz athlon cpu. I believe the module is an GA7IXE or something similar. I'm runing Ubuntu hoary Linux. And the bios for my motherboard is version F7.

I'm looking at purchasing This Drive to be installed into my system. But I have heard that some older systems cant use drives so large and it is becuase of a bios limitation.

I'm wondering if I buy the drive will it even work at all? or will it be limited to the total gb size that the bios can see. What if i were to mount the entire drive under one folder called /home2 will i be able to use all the availible disk space? if not can I create mulitple partitions each mounted to their own folders and be able to use the drives total capacity that way? Hopefully someone can shed some light on this delima I am having.

Hi, I don't know the latest, but most large drives used to come with an install disk that would tack new info to your BIOS to allow bigger drives. Maxtor's was called MAXBLAST. It's a free download at their site. Check your manufacturer's site. Some Maxblasts will also work on all brands of drives. Luck, Jim

yea i think they have the translation software included.. i do remember such a thing even years ago. its slightly less performance but it works.
