LOL, i've had 3x 250 GBs for a while now...amongst other HDDs.

how to format:

run -> CMD
my personal preference to the enter the commands cd\ then cls

then type format C: and answer Y to all questions

this is easier if you boot straight into the command prompt
 

was the drive in a retail box that came w/ a CD? If so, format instructions are on CD.

If not, visit approriate maker of the drive (Maxtor, Seagate, WD, etc) and download the drive utilies software to format it...
 
I was always afraid to get a drive that big (and use it all).

I've had more that a couple drives die on me over the years. 250GB is a lot of stuff to lose, unless you backup regularly.
