I have an existing 120gb installed on IDE1 on mobo. That wire goes to the 120gb and a dvd-rom. On IDE2 on the mobo we have a burner. I bought a 250gb and can't get it to install it any way I tried. The 250 has a promise ultra card. When I disconnected the burner and put it back...the computer just hangs at startup trying to read the drives and wont go any further. I had to disconnect the burner for the computer to start. This is how I had the computer in the first place and it wont even do that. The ultra card wont even show up on my computer anymore even with the drivers in my computer. When the ultra card is plugged in and new drive is in it, it'll scan and say there are no drives attached to it. The first time I attached the ultra card it showed up, but now it's gone. My computer won't even start up now when my burner in my IDE2 is plugged in. How can I fix that problem and get my 250gb installed using the promise ultra card? This is really annoying me. Everything is on cable select so there isn't a problem with jumpers. I dont have a floppy disk drive so I attached it to use the diskettes that came with the drive and the floppy disk drive wont even show up either.

Thanks in Advance.

First never mix with CD/DVD drive with hard drive to use the same channel. It will slow down the transfer rate.

Try to remove the promise card and other harddrive. Just startup harddrive with the OS and see what happen?

UPDATE: The ultra promise card shows up now, but the drive won't show up. It says the drive has not been initialized. The capacity also reads 131,XXXmb. Disk Type:Unknown

This is a 250gb hard drive. With this card it's supposed to read as 250. What the heck is "drive has not been initialized" ?

Please help.

Use XP Disk Management to check, and you can partition/format the drive.

I just found out that my "Avance AC 97 Audio" and my Promise Ultra IDE Controller are both on the same IRQ. Does that matter?

Type diskmgmt.msc in RUN. It will bring up the Disk Management windows.

Check with Device Manager and see these 2 device are IRQ confict. If not then is fine.

It says that the new 250gb is 128gb of unallocated space. And NO the devices are not conflicting. What now?

I got the drive initialized. It is now online, but it does not show up in my computer or any other thing accessing drives. It is still 128gb of unallocated space. What now?

Yes. Before you tell me to partition it to 2-3 different pieces......The capacity(meaning its max) says 128gb or 131,xxxmb in the device manager.

I didn't tell you to partition it to 2-3 different partitions. Can you tell me what is the total capacity of the drive in the disk management?

That's strange. What kind of HD (WD or Maxtor)? Is the hard drive come with the disk manager software? If so, try it.

WD and yes it does, but it's on floppy and I don't have a FDD. When I connected a spare floppy disk drive I had laying around it didn't show up. It didn't do anything.
