250GB HD: Better to split up into smaller partitions, leave at 250 or no difference?

So aside from whatever other troubles I'm having now, I'm making some progress...but should I bother resizing it down to like 100, 100 and 50 (I know it doesn't break down that evenly) or just keep it at 250? Any performance differences and reliability differences?

No, split it up.

I would never leave that as a single volume, esp of that size.
If that is the drive your OS resides on I recommend putting the OS on its own partitions and keeping all your data seperate.
That way if you need to reinstall the OS you wont loose any data. Some people recommend placing programs on a seperate partition as well but I always leave them on the OS partition due to registry changes.

which would you rather defrag.......250gb or 75gb ??

which would you rather backup......250gb or 75gb ??

Its not about performance or reliability, its about maintenance....

Also, bad shutdowns might force a disk check during windows startup. I had times when the disk check was on system partition, times when it was on data partition, and times when it was on both. Make more partitions, it certainly helps

I will try to give you some "g-e-n-e-r-a-l" info.
This is a very personal thing and everyone has there own
ideas and needs. You are getting the opinion of one person.
Everyone else will have diferent opinions, but in the end, you have
to decide and do something.

First of all, you bought a 200 gb drive so you must have some idea
what you are going to put on it. Give this some thought.

Second of all, Windows OS files are a couple of gigabytes long.

Third of all, you don't want too many partitions, cause you will go nuts
trying to keep track of them

So for you, I would suggest that you use 2 or 3 partitions, mind you, I don't know what your
needs are and don't how you are going to organize your files.

So what the hell, go with C:=50 and D:=150
or....C=50 and D:=50 and E:=100
or say that I am all wet and use what you want cause I don't know what it is.

Just do it, and you will find out how it works out, thats what we all d.
Then next time we do it diferent..
Just remember, there is no perfect solution

Good Luck, I am leaving.

The larger your OS partition, the sadder you will be when the reformat time comes!

Edit:
There is a trade-off (as usual). If you make the OS partition small, it will be easy to reformat and re-install.
But, it will fill up soon as you add more programs (asuming that you install all the programs on the same partition).
If you make the OS partition too big, it will not fill up soon. But, if you need to re-install the OS because of a virus or whatever reason, you will have to manage a lot of data, assuming that you can still access them!
