2500k doesn't overclock under windows 8.1?

As many of you know, overclocking a 2500k is extremely easy. It is enough to just raise the multiplier and everything else can be default. (unless you are going really high that is)

I ran my CPU overclcked for about 2 years with no issues.

Sometime after I upgraded to Win 8 from Win 7 I noticed my system was significantly less responsive, and when I checked I realized it's back at stock settings. I went to BIOS and overclocked again. When I restarted, m system crashed horribly during windows boot and showed that screen with a sad face. I restarted again and again, and this time my system wouldn't get into windows at all. The installation got corrupted and I had to re-install...

I thought maybe it's my dual 760 GTX SLi setup... Maybe my 600w OCZ PSU cannot handle the stress.... Nonsense off course since I ran overclocked for a very long time with this setup and everything was rock solid.

Anyway, I pulled both cards and tried using the system without them. Again, as soon as I went from stock to overclocked settings, system would crash every time.

I went back to stock, and Windows loads fine...

I am not doing an aggressive overclock! The system will not go into windows even at 3.7GHz. It will crash at any setting as long as it's anything over stock..

What gives? How can I get my overclock back short of going back to Win 7?

Do a clear CMOS and try your OC from scratch.

How much voltage have you fed your 2500k all this time? You haven't gone over 1.3v for 24/7 use, have you? Temperature? Cooling? Any other voltages?

I have no problem with 8.1 overclocking.
Have you tested your ram and load tested your power supply?

I was at default voltage before. Never needed to raise it.

Already cleared CMOS went back to fail safe defaults and OC'd again... Same negative results.

I am using a Xigmatek Dark Knight Cooler. Served me well all this time...

This sounds like MB issue to me. Unfortunately there are just too many many things that can cause weird problems like this and no easy way to identify what is causing it.

Ok, this is just weird...

I went to Gigabyte website and updated to latest version of BIOS. I have no idea which version I was on before, because I don't see it displayed anywhere...

The newest version is only described on the website as having better USB 3.0 support.. Nothing about Windows 8 or CPUs...

But somehow it fixed my issue. I restarted, overclocked to 4.2 GHz and the system booted into windows without any problems... What the heck is going on? This doesn't make any sense.. I ran this system on the old BIOS before just fine.

You ran the system overclocked for a long time, if it happens again I'd try swapping out the PSU. Did you leave it on 24/7? As someone stated it could be many things, or just a simple bios update. I would also look at the memory when resetting the system, but as long as its fine now.......

I am suspecting the PSU also. I do not run my system 24/7 but it is on most of the day most of the time. At least 8-12 hours every day. If I see this happening again I will definitely swap out the PSU for something better just to eliminate that out of the picture.

I tried going to 4.3GHz and 4.4GHz and the system is very unstable. It will crash and reboot randomly during normal Windows use.

I seen many people on forums getting 4.5-4.8GHz easily with my setup on air, so I should be able to get the same, provided my PSU is not the problem or whatever else. Will raise the voltage a bit and see if I can get a stable 4.5GHz.

At 4.2GHz I have been very stable all day today. that's without my graphics cards off course. I have yet to test with them being back in the system.
