did you fit the heatsink on right?
checked and rechecked seems fine

Is this a retail or OEM processor? If retail, you could compare the retail hsf to the Jet 7. Did you have any use of the computer before the Jet 7? I have a Barton in a Soyo mainboard and the temperatures have to be skewed warmer than actual.

The blinking white LED indicates that the blinking white LED circuitry is functioning within normal parameters.:p

it's OEM and I just installed it today

what is the "normal" range of temp for Athlon with this cooling?

Nimo, you didn't tell us what temps it runs under load. Also, isn't that old heatsink only supposed to be for up to a 2100 or so?

Well I didn?t run it under full load for long but using toast(100% load) the temp shoots up past 55 in under a min

Regarding the heatsink on the box it says 3200+ and higher , so I donno

if it is a bad heatsink what would you recommend?

nimo a little tip, click the quote botton when you're replying to someone's post, it makes it easier to read.

As for the heatsink, it is meant to be an average performer but definately not the worst, as it is based on the Aero 7. Also, a 1mm thickness for thermal paste seems a bit too much to me... when I apply a layer, I use a razor and I get it so thin it's like paper, and performs very well. If it's too thick it has a negative impact on cooling, all you're trying to do is fill the minute ridges and gaps on the bottom of the heatsink. I reccommend getting some decent thermal compound too like Arctic Silver 5 or Arctic Ceramique, your temps should drop by 3c-4c or maybe more if you apply it like I said.

If you want the best air-cooling and money is not an option, get a SLK900 and a good 92mm fan.

hm i'm confused.. thought it was the stock heatsink.. but those don't come in a separate box usually. so is it something else?

anyways, it should perform better, stock or otherwise. do as richdog said.

as for aftermarket, the main consensus seems to be with thermalright. either slk800a or slk900a and a good 80-92mm fan

I agree completely with Rich, but you still shouldn't be getting temps that high with a decent cooler! I have a 2400, overclocked to 2.1Ghz, and it runs 42°C while folding, and 44°C while running Prime95 (the max heat Torture Test). Even while running @2.2Ghz or higher, I've never seen any higher than 48°C. If you're absolutely sure that your heatsink is seated correctly, you're going to have to make a case mod. I have an Antec case with 2x120mm fans, and I was still getting around 48-49°C at idle (not OC'd), until I installed an 80mm fan directly over my heatsink. My temps immediately dropped around 10-12°C @idle and under load.

If you decide to try that, just take your 80mm fan and a tape measure, and hold the fan where you want it to be, then measure to where the inside edge of the case in both directions. Plus, make sure you cut the panel from the inside, or you will have the ugliest case in town! It worked better than expected for me.

The weird thing is that I left it to run overnight with some apps (not a 100% load ) and in the morning the temp was 52C

I touched the HS and it was just over room temp
I know for a fact that my P4 HS got very hot after a night of work

After that I added 80mm fan on the side of the HS and still the temp shows as 48C

So assuming that I didn?t install the HS properly
How can I check if it?s correctly or incorrectly installed ?
