$2500.....which gaming laptop?

Trying to help a friend to pick a laptop in the (at or below) $2500 range. Laptops are not my specialty so I turned to my most trusted experts. You.

Desktop is not an option. Gaming is THE most important use for this machine above all else. Secondary use will be the norm for the average college student.

We would really appreciate any suggestions.....

or... wait a little while til the newer 7900 geforce go's come out.

No problem with Dell here, that's what I got for my two nephew's though neither were interested in laptop gaming, therefore I did not research the gaming angle at all. Any idea's when 7900 GO is planned for release? A quick search showed only 78xx for Q1 06.

EDIT: I doubt that 7900 GO will be available in our timeframe. 7800 GO would be preferable as it is currently available.

i agree with the dell but would the laptops sporting the 7900 go's be in the price range? if they are, that, 2 gigs of ram, and a high quality display is all he'll need. a 7200rpm drive (60gb maybe) should be nice but i don't think it's needed

Dell w/coupon. Sager customer service isnt good. Worse than Dell actually. If you want a Sager buy it from a 3rd party vendor (PCTorque) that'll give you good customer service.

Personally I'd pick an Alienware or Falcon Northwest for that much money, maybe not the falcon cause I think those go for more than $2500.

hmm, i'd wait for the 7900GTX Go, but the 7800GTX Go is perfectly fine though. my friend has an XPS Gen2 with a 6800 Ultra Go in it and it played most games fine (last year haha).

the new XPS looks good though.

sager notebooks would be a better choice over Dell, personally.

That is until you need warranty work performed. You can also forget about extended warranties because after the 1st year it's farmed out to Phillips, Warrantec, and others. It's also a return-to-depot warranty, and in some cases repair times can and will exceed 1-2 months. I speak from experience.

Dell offers great notebooks, and the on-site warranty is worth every penny.

I am in college right now I initally got a laptop from my parents as a gift before I built my own desktop. Since getting the desktop it get used about 95% of the time don't get fooled into the myth that laptops are a nescessity for college.

Well, that's really only true if you live on campus. I used to live about 20 minutes away from campus; it was easier just to bring my laptop and stay at school between my classes than to drive home and use my desktop. But if you live on campus or if you're close to it, I'd definately say do the desktop.

i'm in the same boat as OP, now looking at the Travelmate 8200 and the NX860XL.
heres what the 8200 has over the 860: integrated bluetooth, SPDIF, DVI. is it worth $150? that is the question...

No problem. It just depends on how you're going to use it. If you're talking about the Acer 8200, that has a 15.4" screen vs. the 17" screen of the Gateway. Here's what I would do: if you only want a laptop, get the 17" Gateway. If you want a laptop plus the ability to come home and plug it in to a nice monitor and speaker system, get the 15.4" Acer. 17" laptops are monsters and you can be pretty happy using them by themselves. I personally have a 15.4" Gateway laptop. When I come home, I plop it on my laptop stand and connect my external monitor, keyboard, and mouse. If you get the Acer laptop, you can really utilize the DVI connection for a sweet LCD monitor and the SPDIF for an optical surround-sound system like the Logitech Z-5500s.

Like I said, it just depends on what you want and need. My brother has a 17" HP laptop and loves it; that's all he has. I have a 15.4" Gateway laptop and I love it; when I come home, I connect it to the rest of my system and use it as a pseudo-desktop. My brother has no desire to do that and just enjoys using his 17" widescreen whereever he is, but I like hooking my laptop up to an ergonomic keyboard and 20" widescreen LCD. Personally, I like having a smaller, lighter laptop to carry around with me and then having a full-on computer system when I come home.
