2500+ stop error in win2000 past 200fsb

Hey all,

I am trying to overclock this board I just bought, it's an MSI K7N2 Delta-L and I have a 2500+ barton 333Mhz proc with it. I can seem to get the fsb up to 200 and the rig runs a little warm but nothing past 55 C at max load. As soon as I pass from 200 - 202 (no 201 in CMOS) I can't boot windows, POST completes fine but I get a blue screen of death that says my boot drive is inaccessible. Is there a setting I'm missing? I would figure Win2000 could handle any FSB so that shouldn't be an issue. I would just move the multiplier up but I believe my proc is locked. As soon as I try to change the multiplier value from 11 - 11.5 or higher then the reset leaves the PC dead (can't get back to CMOS or anything). I have Crucial PC-3200 (2x256 in dual channel running synchronously) in the machine so I'm pretty sure it can handle 202fsb no sweat. This is one of the strangest OC problems I've encountered. Any suggestions? (Prime95 CPU torture seems to run ok for several hours, warm but ok)

I would suggest buying a board specifically made for overclocking, assuming you've already raised your vcore (processor voltage) to at least 1.75-1.80v. Oh, just for kicks, try raising your vdimm (ram voltage) to around 2.8v, assumng that MSI will even let you adjust vdimm.

Ah that got it! Raised the vcore (now running at 1.75v which fluctuates up to 1.81) and that at least will now let me into windows, stabilizing at around 44C no load, will try full load later. I will try to raise the Vdimm (which is possible) if I hit any more problems before my heat maxes out near 50C w/o load. I'm shooting for at least about 210 (heat allowing) with a 11x will give me a 2.3Ghz clock. Thanks for your help!

Okay, try downloading this: SpeedFan, which will let you monitor your temps while in Windows, but doesn't have to be "setup" like Motherboard Monitor does. Also, here's the link to Prime95 which will not only stress your processor, so you can find out what your maximum load temps will be, but will also checks to make sure your system is 100% stable. Open the program, select Options, then Torture Test, then run the Blended test. Run it for at least 30 minutes to start with. If it fails, either raise your voltages or back off on the overclock.

OK, it's working a little better / little worse after upping the voltages. I ran prime95 and Cpu-burn in and Prime95 keeps failing everytime after 198 fsb, cpu-burn in however generates more heat and doesn't fail until about 205 @ which the machine restarts on it's own before CPU-burn in has a chance to fail. I can run C&C Generals fine for several hours with no problems. Temps are maxing out at 205 around the upper 50s and I expected a failure but prime95 seems to be buggy. It has glitches/crashes at random times even on a lower fsb than 198. I'm thinking of 2 things. First, run cpu-burn in for 12 hours or so at stock fsb/voltage (166) and then seeing if the processor is any more stable at the higher settings. Also looking in to getting a better heatsink/cooling fan for processor and new fans for my case. They are all stock and seem to do well at stock settings but I'm not quite sure they can handle the OC temps. Any suggestions on a certain fan or cooling solution? I can't afford water/phase change or the like but I could go for new fans/heatsinks or just plain rearranging. Thanks for the tips!
