2500+ Mobile or A64 2800+?

This would most likely be used for programming and compiling sorta stuff, most likely under Linux. Which one should I look at? The 2500+ mobile is cheaper and probably as fast once overclocked (how far do they usually go?) but the A64 w/ 64-bit makes me want to pick that(how far would I expect the 2800+ to overclock?)

Which one do you guys think would make the most sense? I do want it to last decently long, and performance under Linux and X is quite important to me. (is P4 better for that? because I could use my P4 system under linux and replace my main Win XP box with an AMD) I'd probably be picking it up in the next month or so, but if someone gives me a good reason to wait I probably will (PCI-e doesn't matter to me at all), I mainly want to get it before December so I have time to get everything nicely setup before next semester.

I have a pretty decent idea as to what mobo to get for the 2500+, but not really for the 2800+, if you recommend that could you also give me an idea of what might be a good motherboard?

Thanks,

Dave

Just to veer off on a wild tangent, doesn't compiling involve a lot of prolonged HDD seek/read/write activity? Ever thought about... about... you know, that one thing?

It is pretty much only cpu actually.

EDIT: Last I heard AMD was faster at compiling because of the short pipeline, but I'm also very interested in the general performance of the operating system.

I know Jason Clark had glowing things to say about his Opteron, you might PM him for comments. He had a HT P4 before the Opteron.

Athlon64 2800+ (or better, I like the 3000+ or 3200+ newcastle myself)

athlon 64 would be the better choice here as it is much faster then the athlon XP

The Athlon 64 2800+ isn't that much faster than a 2.2GHz Athlon XP. See a review here.

If you're on a budget the XP-Mobile is the way to go. You can get the motherboard and processor for less than an Athlon 64 2800+ (ASUS A7V880: $59; XP-Mobile 2400+: $79).

With that said, the 64-bit Linux will probably give you a decent boost when compiling stuff.

Yeah... the XP-M seems probably the way to go, I could probably hit 2.5ghz with it without tooooooooooo much trouble.

A DFI Infinity NF2-400 Ultra motherboard would do superbly with that mobile.
