How is everyone doing? I am a bit new to overclocking. Got a few questions to ask. Appreciate some Feedback.

I have purchased the Soltek FRN2-L motherboard. I also have a Kingston Hyper X 2700. I was planning on purchasing the 2600 Barton. Then I was like thinking that I would increase the FSB by a little between 5-10 Mhz, (I read some people were able to do this without changing its timings). Then I have come across the 2500 Mobile which is basically the same price of the 2600 barton, minus the stock fan. I have read in forums that increasing the vcore on a processor will wear it down some, to a point where it will not work anymore at that vcore setting, so one will have to increase it again and again.

For me if I was to overclock the Mobile (If I am to get it) I would be very pleased if I could attain somewhere in the neighborhood of 2100-2200. Thats between an 2800 XP or a 3200 XP. Would I be able to get that type of speed at the 1.45-1.65 range or would I need to go higher to reach that? I would set the FSB to around 166-180 (read one guy had his 2600 Mobile at 13.5 X 178MHZ). Also in regards to the mutipler is their a limit that I can change the multiplier higher (ex. up to 13x). I want to do overclocking but not to the extreme, so that I could have my computer for a while. And besides I would like to have it around even if I do upgrade in a couple of years around. So would you guys suggest that the 2500 Mobile can meet what I specified and still last a while or should I just go to the 2600 Barton??

Thanks!!

I have never heard of anyone having to "reapply" the vcore over and over again as you stated. Once it is set in the bios, unless you change something about the system it should not need to be reset.

Setting a 2500 or 2600 mobile to 1.65v (vcore) (may need to go as high as 1.7) you should easily get to 200x12 (2.4Ghz). Most people would consider 1.7v to be very safe, keep in mind that the mobiles are really desktop processors specially picked as they are be able to withstand more heat. I think people start to get squimish when voltages get above 1.75 especially if they want to keep the processor around for sometime. On the other hand many folks are running them at 1.85v and higher and able to push them to 2.5 even up to 2.7ghz.

I would recommend a decent cooling. Heatsinks such as: Speeze Falconrock (cheapest solution), Thermaltake Volcano 12 (middle ground), or something from Thermalright or Zalman as the cadillacs. The Zalmon is also usable on the Athlon 64 processors if that is a path you want to take in the future. Note that the Thermalright will need a decent fan (80 or 92mm) on it that will push 40cfm or more (try to find a Panaflo fan).

Good luck and welcome! :)

The 2500 mobile will more than meet your needs. I have 2 mobile 2400's and 1 mobile 2600 and all 3 can overlcock past 2200 MHz with no more than 1.65v vcore set in bios. My mobile 2600 will go to the mid 2400's with 1.65v set in bios. As for any problems with going past a 12.5 multiplier, someone else will have to help you with that question because it's a mobo specific problem and not a processor problem and I have no experience with your mobo. I do know that my A7N8X-dlx won't go past a 12.5 multi without modding and my NF7-S has no problem at all running any multiplier that's not labeled as a reserved multi.

For cooling it, I highly recommend a Thermalright SLK800(A or U series), SLK900(A or U series), SLK947-U or a SP97, if that last heatsink will fit your board. You can use a lower cfm fan with those heatsinks and still have good temp control, even when the proc is loaded at 100%. I would recommend an 80mm Thermaltake SmartFan 2 for the fan for the heatsink because it has a potentiometer to control the fan speed. That way, you can adjust the fan speed to your level of noise tolerance.

Thanks for the response guys. I'll give the mobile a try.

I heard that for example if a person has there cpu overclocked to like 2700 Mhz at a VCore of 1.7, eventually it needs more power to maintain it at that 2700 or they would have to clock it down. I forgot where I think it was another forum though. But that's what the guy was saying. Thanks again, the mobile it is.

Newegg.com usually has all mobile barton flavors, 2400/2500/2600. The 2400 is currently $77, $90 for the 2500 and $99 for the 2600. Free shipping. Personally I went for the 2600. I'm running it with a Thermalright ALX-800 for $16 and a Panaflo FBA08A12H for $7. Those links are for SVC, which is where I bought mine. Probably around $5 or so to ship the two items. I also used to have an all-copper Thermalright SLK-800A. The hybrid aluminum/copper ALX-800 seems to do as good a job and is cheaper and lighter. I suspect the ALX-800 may not work as well with low CFM fans versus the SLK-800A, but I don't have any proof. In any case, I'd be happy with either.
