You want a more then big enough case and a high-end motherboard with multiple pci-e slots. You should probably just get 2 6970's. Imo a 6990 only makes sense if you only have room for 1 card or want to go with a tri or quad fire setup. Not to mention they seem to be out of stock or priced extremely high at most retailers.

Oh yeah coming from a Pentium 4 space heater, your gonna be in for a treat.

Think most gamers would have built about 2 rigs between then and now,and is that pentium 4 a 478 or 775 socket?

Or is this a first gaming build for you?

Even a super cheap dual core would be leaps better.

Yup i had a 478 2.4ghzs out of a dell dimension 2400 clocked to 3.5ghzs till the week the e6750 came out.

I'm sure i could have waited easily till the q6600 g0 dropped in price but i had a issue with the mobo overheating the processor and overvolting it.

Considered a new chip for the mobo or the Abit ic7 max3 mobo but i had some money saved up over the summer and just built a e6750/8800gts rig.

Also while the 6990 is a awesome card, avoid it.

Gf bought me one for my birthday and it was so loud it kept me up at night.

Took it back that next morning.

But if you want a super loud card thats bigger then the titanic, find some stable drivers for it cause the initial release ones sucked majorly.

I had to reinstall my os cause of the drivers crashing my system beyond booting.

i know loudness is its major drawback...but seriously...BF3 Alpha benchmarks were released few days ago and hd 6990 gave 83 fps...BF3 IS EVERYTHING...i am going to decide which card to buy after BF3 beta benchmarks are released this september...

This post illustrates why your current plan of building a monster PC is silly. If you can afford a $2500 PC every 6 years, then you can afford a $1250 PC every 3 years.

My advice, build a reasonable $1250 PC. You will be able to get 80% of the overall performance for half the cost. Save the rest for upgrades or new machine in 3 years.

thats a nice advice....but i can definitely afford upgrade to good gpu or cpu within couple of of years....it is just that i wasn't so hardcore pc gamer few years back...its all due to release of some awesome games this year, which forced me to upgrade my system...

Some charts in the forums showed the 6970,the gtx570 and even the gtx580 getting over 64 average.

I wouldn't pay $300 or even $200 to get 20 more frames if in game its getting over average 60 cause i don't think most gamer's would see it.

If your card can do 60 or better average its more then plenty for bf3 no need for 100 fps.

The cost difference would cover a nicer monitor a ssd or bigger ssd, couple hard drives in a array?

As a prior owner of the 6990 i don't miss that card i sat on a gtx580 for a while and it was overkill for 1920x1080 for me.
