Alright, enough verbal sparring gentlemen, now how about recommending a board per her/hs request earlier in the thread. For A64 I'd recommend the Albatron K8X800 ProII.

Just bought pc3200 memory and an athlon 2500+ at frys. Set the fsb to 400, and off to windows I go! Right now everything is running fine, and even my load temp is under 40!!!!

Here's an interesting link for choosing an A64 board :)
Am considering too moving to A64 but dunno if i should wait for new chipsets (nf3 250 or VIA K8T800 pro, K8T890 etc). Also waiting for Prescott performance/price results!

i'de recommend asus a7n8x-dlx (nice sound quality, dolby and stuff) to go with a 2500.

Hey Everyone,
Thanks for all the great info, didn't mean to start a war. I guess I should say that this confirmed what I already believed, it all depends on how you look at things. I read that Intel is talking about their new products and price war this week, so I'll see what happens. Would hate to buy something a day too soon you know. So keep up the chatter if anyone has new things to talk about. A big thanks to all! Hey Duvie, yes I'm female. Jayle

i'd say take advantage of the price drops on northwood and get the p4. it seems like it'll fit better with your uses, and the $ difference isn't much of a concern.

Well, if you were referring to the original poster, then you need to be more specific. A quote to MY post using a pronoun "you" means it is directed to me.... isn't it? That means, you can think before you write.... ;) Why try to avoid being gender specific? Is there something wrong with the ladies....? :p

Edit:
Well, back into topic.

Recommendations:

1) Athlon 64 3200+ AND Biostar K8VHA (YEs, 3200+ over a 3000+ as the extra cache will help in a few months...)
2) Athlon XP 2800+ AND..... any good NForce 2 ultra 400 mobo.

Alex

PS. Anyways, I still would like to test how fast it runs in different hardware. The original poster asked about "CakeWalk", so I would like to find out the truth about how the CPUs behave in cakewalk..... I will download it, and report my findings.

Heck, even if you get 2.3ghz-2.4ghz from the Barton the P4c@3.4ghz is going to be faster for everything from gaming, media encoding, Photoshop, and offer hyperthreading to boot. It's well worth the extra money the way I see it, particularly with overclocking in mind.

He has it right...but for "walking all over".

I'd estimate a maximum 20% performance increase with the P4 assuming "safe bet" overclocks of both ie barton at 3200+ and P4 at 3.3Ghz...

Now the question is will you pay almost 100% more money for 20% more performance?

All prices from the only place you should shop newegg.com and both great boards from great company.

Barton 2500 $90
A7N8X-E Deluxe $115

or

p4 2.4C $165
P4C800-E Deluxe $184

I know my answer.:) "Dude! I'm gettin' an AMD":p

Hell I'd Just get a Shuttle AN35N for $62 and the $85 OEM Barton and still be cheaper than the p4 all by itself not to mention expensive intel MBs.

As always AMD dominates the price/performance ratios.

Hey,
Thanks Zebo, I understand the 20% gain vs 100% price. I guess it's the balance between one initial higher cost, and a 10-20% increase in speed every second of everyday there on out. I will be interested in your findings Alexruiz, please post when you have some results. Thanks, Jayle

Why get a $184 motherboard when a $100 one will suffice? Less than $100, actually.
