So what you're saying is for $250 you want a better 2.1 system than the z5300s with 2 speakers hooked up?
You're looking at $100+ for a receiver (unless you go used), so I'd get a receiver and a pair of bookshelves for $150 (see yoyo's general audio thread for a couple of suggestions) and reuse the z5300 sub with the receiver until you have more money to upgrade it.
For $250 I'd look at either active studio monitors or a small amp + bookshelf speakers. You wouldn't be able to effectively integrate your existing sub into the system though without a receiver as unfalliblekrutch mentioned.
