Wtf, when i defag my gf external hd it reports as fat 32....why is this? Could the format be why I am unable to copy over a 10.3 gig file? This is driving me nuts!

Yes it could be FAT32. Most externals are pre-formatted FAT32 for reverse compatibility with Win9x systems.

Open the disk manager (right click My Computer, Manage, Disk Management). All drives and partitions will be listed and what format they're in.

Yes, Fat32 has a file size limit of 4Gb. No good for video work. Also FAT32 has a huge cluster over-hang problem on large drives so it wastes a lot of space.

You can convert the drive to NTFS as long as you don't need to access the drive from a Win9x OS. Either use WinXP's Fat32 to NTFS converter: http://www.ntfs.com/quest3.htm

or use Partition Magic.

Either way, you should backup anything important. Sometimes conversions go sour.

Hope this helps...
