Just recently purchased a WD 250 GB SATA hdd...

However, in Windows setup, it shows that I have 130 GB of unpartitioned space...

Where the f*** did my other 120 GB go?

I remember my brother selecting this option "Low level format"... could this be the problem?

Note: This is my first time installing SATA hdd... I'm having no problems getting OS to be installed... but what pissed me off is the 130 gigs of unpartitioned space when im supposed to have 250.

Requirements for support of 48-bit LBA (Exceeding 137Gb HDD size limit):

OPERATING SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS:

Windows 2000 with Service Pack 3 or better or Windows XP with Service Pack 1 or better

Hope this helps...

If you don't have either of those OS the WD Life Guard tools should be able to get you back you other 120 after you have installed your OS and upgraded it to either 2000 with SP3 or XP with SP one or two. Put in the Life Guard cd that came with your HD and it should tell you pretty much the same thing.

Sorry, I should've elaborated a bit...

I haven't installed OS (Windows XP w/ Service Pack 1) but after reading Flying Penguin and Sauropelta's posts... I'm guessing that I'll get my 120 GB back after i completely installed Windows XP with either service pack 1 or 2?

I guess I should just install windows xp with 130 gb for now... and get my other 120gb back after installing service pack or wd life guard tools?

Oh yeah, I never changed anything in my BIOs and I am able to install windows xp...
should i leave the BIOs settings alone?

Thanks.

Yea that's what I just recently had to do.. I have a 160 gb WD 7200. Windows will then recognize the missing HD space as un-formatted space. Which you should then be able to format it for use using win xp in windows. You can put in your WD life guard CD now before you load windows and should be able to get some info about what to do with that.. gl
