could be. or not. place around here will do it for $99.88, but i'm sure they use cheap parts. if the guys doing yours are using OEM parts, then that seems like a decent price to me. if they're using the same parts as the $99.88 guys, then you're getting hosed.

are they doing all 4 wheels?

Yeah, it's fine. Figure about $100 or so to have them both turned, plus about $60 for the pads, and then tack on an hour's labor for the job. A lot of time it's better to just replace the rotors than to have them turned (because turned rotors are thinner, which makes them that much more likely to warp again in the future), so you might want to ask how much for that. OEM replacement rotors usually run about $80-$90 each.
As ElFenix said, make sure they're using (at least) OEM parts.
FYI: it recently cost me a little over $200 in OEM parts to replace just the front rotors and brakes on one of my cars, and I did all the labor myself.

Yes, but if you don't do your own brakes, that's about the most overpriced work you can get done on a car.

My MR2:
$18*4 for new Raybestos rotors
~$40-50 for pads...yes I splurged on decent ones

Couple of hours to put them on myself and bed them in properly.

Oops, yeah I guess I left out some details.

The work would be to replace the front and rear pads, as well as turn the front rotors.

You know, I wouldn't be adverse to doing the work myself. I enjoy fixing things. I'm just afraid I'll mess something up! And when it comes to brakes, you don't wanna mess up!

I wish I knew someone who's changed brakes before.

Dosen't sound bad. That is if they are doing all four wheels. But really what are you paying for (brake pads)... They are charging a heap for labor. The brake pads are probably less then 10 bucks for a set.

I just found a turorial on changing the rotors and brake pads for my car, I think I'm gonna try to do it myself this weekend.

Do I need to order anything besides rotors and pads? Any special tools required?

The ones that advertise $99.88, I think it's "Just Brakes". They suck. I went there once. It was around $250 or so for pads and turned rotors. They left some packaging material on the pads causing them to make noise. I had to go back to get it removed.

Great,

I always suggest DIY if your up to it. You may want to check if you have rear drums (in which case are more complicated). If it's all disc you might want to see if you need shims or anti-rattle clips. I also put a dab of anti-squeek compound on the back of the pads.

I also suggest to go to autozone and get Liftime warranty pads. They are usually 20 dollars a set but when they wear out you just get new one's (free) each time. I don't exacly understand the logic but that is they way it works.

If you have rear drums you may want to get a set of vise grips or rent (from autozone ) some drum brake tools. Other then that you can use a standard tool set to change most brakes.

Thanks for the info! I'll head to Autozone tonight hopefully. Does autozone sell half-decent rotors as well?

Yes, I have rear drums.

I know it's just a 99 Altima, but I still don't recommend getting low-end rotors in the $18-$33 range. Or $20 pads. That's just me. I insist on OEM quality or better.

Also, you will need a good quality floor jack, jack stands, and basic tools in order to do the job. Special tools shouldn't be required, but sometimes it takes a little patience to get a rotor off by hand (if it should get stuck and/or has been on there a really long time). Shims and anti-squeal compound should be included with pads.

Be prepared for work. The drums are harder but once you do them you should know how in the future. The drums have springs that hold the pads in place as well in some cars you have to adjust the parking brake right after replace the pads. I use a set of needle nose like vise grips to remove the springs. Once you do this you need to put it all together the way it was. Some of the springs are hard to install. Be careful. If you have problems take a picture with a digital camera before doing work. It wouldn?t hurt to also get a can of brake parts cleaner to fully clean off all the brake pad dust that all over the components on the drum.

As for the rotors AutoZone sells. They are pretty cheap (15 a rotor). But I don?t they are the best. You can spend a little more and get better rotors. You?d be better of if you can find a machine shop to turn your rotors. It will cost about the same but your rotors on the car is probably OEM if the car is relatively new.
