250$ 8800GTS 320MB

I noticed that prices are dropping like crazy on the GTS series of cards... After rebates this XFX card is only 250$ from newegg, I think I saw a card for 245 from someone else (and I think it was 640MB ram but I am not sure)...

This is interesting because the GT is slated to cost 250...

So for the exact same price... what should one go with?

I can't wait until the reviews come pouring in... But I would assume the GT to be the better deal since shader performance is the big killer on all modern games (which is what the GT was redesigned to do better). The extra ram on the GTS might come into play at really high resolutions though. (assuming the 250$ GT version is the one with the 256MB of ram...)

with the 8800gt entering the market at 250-275$ the 8800gts 320mb would only be interesting at around 200 buckazoids imho...and even then i would gladly pay the extra 50 buckaroos for the gt

My thoughts exactly.

...and there will probably be a slew of "slightly used" 8800GTS cards available soon on eBay or in the FS forum here as everyone jumps on the bandwagon.

Cause when the 8800GTS 320's start popping up used on our forums for $150 shipped in the next few weeks, there the chance the broke people ( like me ) need to get a good DX10 card cheap 🙂

on ebay the GTS 640MB are currently selling for 260$+ each... which is rediculous since the GT gives about a 25% performance increase over the GTS 640MB...

The etailer price of 250$ for a GTS 320 is rediculous since thats the same price as a GT and the GT beats the 320MB by as much as 50% on a few tests

i agree...and besides the best speed it also has full H.264 decode acceleration...200 bucks would be a more realistic price for a used and lesser card....even then i still would buy the new gt

The GTS will have stream processors officially increased to 112, the same as the GT. So it should be faster. No idea when this will be happening though. I dont understand why they want three cards that will perform so closely together out there. I guess more choices is better for those who are informed.

"what a load of suckers, people on ebay are paying over 300$ for GTS cards... even the 320MB version... the 640MB versions go for close to 400$. Insane!"

Make up your mind. 😉

It doesn't quite make much sense.
8800GT 112 sp @600MHz
8800GTSv2 112sp @5xxMHz

The GTS would be disadvantaged in core clock, but slightly advantaged in bus width (320 bit over 256 bit) and memory capacity (640 over 512).

These two cards would probably be very close in performance. What's the point?

Does the GTSv2 still have 20 ROP's over the 8800GT's 16?

The GTS v2 "should" have 128 sp's IMHO, to keep at least "some" distance from the GT.

Is Nvidia even going to continue to market the GTS line? I know they don't officially make or sell cards, but it seems like there isn't a need for the GTS 320 or 640 now that the GT fills those slots in both performance and price.

Dont shoot the messenger;

UPDATE - 10/29/07-8:29am: A very interesting addendum to this. I just got off the phone with BFG Tech and NVIDIA has been doing some strange things lately. As of this morning, the GeForce 8800 GTS 640MB (unsure on the 320MB) will have its stream processors officially increased to 112, the same as the GT. This should put the GTS back ahead of the GT as per the paper specs. However, the separation in the products is still going to be very small except for those of you wanting to run high resolutions with AA turned on. To do that you are still going to need a $400+ video card..or so. Our new spec GTS is on the way to us now and we will of course be updating you. Given the GT's faster clocks and possibly larger texture unit, we will have to wait and see. Undoubtedly though, the 8800 GT remains a stellar value at the expected price points.

I dont personally see the point in keeping both cards, if they're going to be close together. And so close to the GTX, although it does have more memory.

Especially considering the "souped up" GTS is selling for over $400!

just tried overclocking my 8800gts 320mb with rivatuner
got 702Mhz clock, 2.1Ghz memory (2x 1.05Ghz), 1.7Ghz shader (that's 37%, 32%, and 45% overclocks) with 169.xx drivers
ran concurrently with ATItool's 3D window to check for artifacts
I had riva run the fan at 100% and load temps so far have not gone above 70C, need to run some more benchmarks to make sure
can anyone recommend some good benchmarks to push my card and let me know what you think of my oc?

also, kind of pissed at NVIDIA for this move but, oh well, this stuff happens all the time in the computer business

the move of releasing a card thats slightly better for half the price over a year later? was there any surprise there? despite the NDA when I learned that nvidia is releasing a new card a year after the old one using new process and new core with twice the transistor count my thoughts were "gee, it is probably a new high end part slated to cost 700$ and double the performance of the ultra... or a mid/low range part costing very little and performing almost the same as the upper mid range GTS...." I mean, this isn't rocket science here, one year newer tech = better and cheaper... why are you ANGRY at them for making better cheaper tech available a year later?

As as for nvidia is money grubbing whores for selling the GTS as same price up to GT lunch... nvidia discontinued making the GTS chips monthes ago... its the distributers who were still selling them at high prices, instead of trying to get rid of stock fast...
