For an AMD based system (Newegg.com):

AMD Athlon XP 1700+/266 FSB Processor CPU - RETAIL $76

MSI KT3 Ultra2-R(6380E-060) With RAID and USB 2.0 Retail $107

KINGSTON 256MB 32x64 PC2100 DDR RAM - $63

Total $246 including shipping to New York

Or you could go with the non-raid version ($79) of this mb and use the rest of his budget for a new powersupply.

Heat nor instability will not be issues with proper installation of the heatsink\fan and drivers.

thanks as you can tell not too versed in amd

should i stick with a retail fan

recommendations on an amd power supply?

thanks dr smooth and your opinion of this motherboard?

sorry i want stability as i don't want to hear @#$#@ because it isn't stable😉

xfactordomine thanks for recommending a power supply and including it in the price

how would you rate the ECS K7S5A

sorry to ask does the sblive cause issues with amd?

well, to be honest, i've never used the ECS board, but there's a whole thread on the forums dedicated to it.. 😀

take a peek!

as for SBLive and AMD.. i've never experienced any problems at all.
Take a look at my rig.. that's what's in my box right now and for about 8 other pc's i've build for friends

If you don't mind trading CPU power for a little ease in setup, Newegg also has a Gigabyte i815ep mobo for $73 + intel Celeron 1.3 for $77, these should work with the existing power supply.

Also someone in FS/FT has a (soyo? soltek?) i815ep mobo + cel 1.3 +256MB RAM for $150.

But for video-editing an XP 1700+ would be faster -- check the Anandtech Celeron 1.7 CPU article for Cel 1.3 vs P4-cel-1.7 vs AMD.

from that link:
Mine would not boot if there was a PCI video card in any slot but the second to last one. After I flashed the BIOS, it was fine. The K7S5A isn't the inexperienced, but if you can get it running it runs well.

I agree with Tdas,
Too many newbies got ahold of this board due to the cheap price. There lack of experience, research, and troubleshooting skills I can believe count for the large percentage of returns withthat board....
I have built 5 to date with one being assembled now....
There was a rash of them that were sold with the jumper pin set to clear cmos...I wonder how many idiots sent it back right there..."it won't boot!!!"....
Then there was in that same batch a bunch of them with the cmos battery dieing...I had one bought the battery fixed it right up...
This board was not only picky with power supply it did provide some trouble with ppl with particular ram...
It didn't like running in asynch mode 100/133 with older bios...
PPL who researched it properly could have avoided many of the issues and solved the battery or jumper issue in a flash...

Yeah, I would have to agree with Phoenix on that one, you just shouldn't get a board DOA period. It's like buying a brand new car and not having it start right away when you turn they key. Yeah you could look under the hood and troubleshoot, maybe it's something simple like a loose spark plug wire? Either way, the burden shouldn't be on 'us' - ECS (and every other motherboard manufacturer in Taiwan) should wake up and understand that they should have their products working 100% before they ship, jumpers in right position, CMOS batterys fresh, ect.

As for my little quirk with the cold-boot problem, I've trouble-shooted as far as I'm willing to go and have come to the conclusion that it's just the motherboard and 'not' my components. For $55.00 it's just not worth the effort to tear this thing apart, re-package it, pay for shipping and RMA it back to Newegg. I mean I could and what, risk getting a worse K7S5A?

Let's face it, Newbie syndrome aside - the ECS K7S5A is no pick of the litter. You take the risk of getting a bum board w/any manufacturer, it's just that this risk is a little higher with ECS (K7S5A in particular). Bottom line is you get what you pay for.

I like mine, fast and great performance. Funky cold-boot stalls once in a while I can live with (all I have to do is hit the reset button). I can still recommend it with caution, but I'm not going to praise it.

<---newbie

looking for something that just works right out of the box
i will be reading up on how to put an athlon together so as not to crack the core and building tips
my only experience with athlon(1) a while back
intel quite a few actually lol
pointers or links would be helpful thanks

i know my budget is tight 🙁

yes celeron and duron won't be a choice if possible as i believe they would cripple the efforts with the reduced cache
looking at the review (saw it the other day but just skimmed it)
as choices are limited i will hunt up the article and the fsft soyo thanks

I have been using a MSI\DDR mb since December 2001. The only stability issues I have had started after I "tweaked"
the system or were software related (went away after a hard drive format and Windows reinstallation).

I would not have recommended this mb or anything else if I thought you would have problems with it. Have you had problems
with MSI mbs or heard of problems with them?

msi for me has been flawless on my willie 1.5 gig and (also no overclocking)

i would definately look at msi. i am a newbie in the athlon fields all the choices are swamping me lol

<2.4 b 533 rdram,few choices only😉

guess that makes it easier not so nervous

actually i may have found a winner

thanks dr smooth sounds better than crippling the cache
and after reading the video performance of the celeron vs the xp wow
definately no duron either

would you also recommend Enermax 300W PS ?

Just deals has a Tyan i845D board for 60$ shipped

Okay, here we go

Tyan i845D=60$
Celeron 1.7GHZ (Good for video! 😀) 88$ shipped
256MB crucial DDR2100 50$ shipped
Decent P4 powersupply maybe max 40$
There ya go, a decent P4 based system for under 250$. Didn't think it was possible? 😀

How about this:

Abit NV7-133R nForce 415-D chipset (no onboard video), it has integrated LAN, USB 2.0, RAID, and audio that should match or beat his SB Live! while using a LOT fewer clock cycles - ~$90
Athlon XP 1600+ OEM - $76
Crucial 256MB PC2100 - $63 shipped anywhere in US at crucial.com (or $60 for 256MB PC2100 ECC after $25 coupon, also at crucial.com)
TOTAL: ~$230 (+ plus about $5 shipping for the motherboard, I think)

It should provide a nice upgrade from his 1GHz PIII 128 SDRAM

Or this:

Mobo: AOpen AK75 - $69.
CPU: AMD 1600+ - $55.
HS/Fan: Cooler Master - $11.
Memory: Crucial - $65.
---------------------------
Total $248.

This includes estimated shipping charges - first three items from www.newegg.com, memory direct from Crucial. I have always found AOpen mobos to be very stable at standard clocking, this one should be no different considering the leg up it has from the start with the SiS 745 chip set.
