Blockbuster is having their 25% off of their previously viewed DVDs sale again. Their prices which normally range from $10 to $17 are now from $7.50 to $12.75 plus sales tax. These are good prices on recently released DVDs like Spy Game, Don't Say A Word, Training Day, The Last Castle, Serendipity, The One etc.:)

Couple of caveats:

1) They don't carry widescreen that much anymore, so, odds are you'll get P&S Version(s).
2) Stores around here are (and have been for a while) putting BB Security Stickers (a non-removable DVD Label) on their disks... so... the disk itself won't look "new".

Good deal, regardless.

Can you open up the case and check out the DVD itself for scratches?

The Wide Screen versus Pan-and-Scan must be a local thing. Almost all of the ones for sale in my area are the Wide Screen versions. I always check to make sure I have the Wide Screen version and the DVD is actually in the box before I leave the store however just to be sure. The only time I have ever been burned was once when the DVD wasn't in the box when I got home. Out of about 30 previously viewed DVDs that I have purchased from Blockbuster in the past, only one of them was defective and they immediately exchanged it when I brought it back. In my opinion their 25% off sale is their best one so take advantage of it while you can.

What's up with the stickers they are placing on their DVDs? My local Blockbuster just started putting these stupid stickers on just a couple months ago, and I just rented a DVD the other day that had a hand-written number on it in black permanent marker. I used to really enjoy these deals, but being as anal as I am, I refuse to buy them anymore cause I don't want my DVDs having this crap on them.

Before you buy it at the counter, just tell them you want to make sure the DVD isn't too scratched up, and they should let you inspect it. (Most of the cases have a security lock mechanism so you'll have to ask them to unlock it for you first) So far, none of the Blockbusters I went to complained about me looking at the DVD first. ;)

Actually, Blockbuster has a quality assurance thing going on, so if you aren't satisfied, you can bring it back in 30 days. If it seems really scratched up and there are no other copies left, buy it and then try it at home, if it doesn't work, bring it back. A good tip to follow is to look at the label on the back and get the dvd or tape that has the earliest date, meaning that it had been taken from renting circulation earlier.

I picked up Rush Hour 2, Jurassic Park III, and Planet of the Apes (hey it's only 5 bucks!!) for $6.99, Spy Games for $14.99, and NBA Live 2002 for PS2 for $29.99 (all before discount). The only stickers were on the Planet of the Apes DVD's, and yes there is a 30 day money back guarantee.

DVD only? What about VHS? I like buying cheap VHS from them....like those 4.99 mark down to 2.99 when they have the $2 off. Even cheaper than renting them.

Actually, even used VHS tapes might be 25% off.

I picked up Jay and Silent Bob DVD used over at my local BB a few days ago and their special was "25% off used movies and video games."

I've bought several DVD movies and they have all been widescreen and have had no stickers on them. This is in south florida.

If you're careful, it is possible to remove the security sticker. I have done this to a few of my DVD's with no problems. The disc plays fine, so I guess the "removing this sticker will damage disc" is not so true. You can remove the residue by gently rubbing with a damp cloth. I'm not saying go try this at home, but I have had no problems with the de-labeled discs. It's been over a year, and they look and play fine. My problem with the local BB's are the insane prices. Most of the pre-viewed DVD's are $16.99!! If you find what you like for $9.99, then it feels great, otherwise, it's off to Brag & Moan.
