I just saw this earlier tonight at the Westwood BB by UCLA. I don't know if its everywhere but good luck. There wasn't a huge selection though.

Policy is to sell open box items for retail-10%.

Kinda funny, actually. There's a 15% restocking fee on returns that are working. Those returns get sold as open box. That's an extra 5% that BB gets on open box items.

And managers discourage customer service reps from doing returns (they're supposed to call a sales rep to come and talk the customer out of it - code blue, IIRC), which just astounded me.

They don't even take 10% off open box items at a BB near me. Last weekend I saw an open box $1100 TV for $1000 and a $300 iPod for $280.

There's only restocking fees on certain things (ie. digital cameras, laptops). I don't think TV's are one of those things though I can't be certain. And code blue is the call for backup to a department if it's too busy and not enough sales associates.

putting stuff back up on the shelf costs bb money, even though you think they bank that extra 5% they really don't because used products are harder to sell, hence the sales.

When I worked at Best Buy, the policy was to mark off 10%. There were exceptions to this, if the product doesn't sell at 10% off, then mark it down further. Mostly it was a judgement call and it really depended on the product and the condition of the package. If it was missing stuff, you were supposed to mark it down further for that. Also, if you thought you'd have to mark it down a lot to get rid of it, then that was ok.

Oh yeah, this is for open boxes only. If it was not opened, then no fees and no markdowns.

Funny, I just was in BB yesterday and an open box TV was more expensive than the same one next to it at a sale price.
Most of the open box deals I've seen at BB are only a few bucks. Maybe as much as $10 or $20 on big ticket items.

I guess I should mention that the item on sale was a 30" WS Advent CRT HDTV for $499. (IIRC) They had three in boxes on the floor and two "open box" units on a shelf. The speakers were on the sides, which made the TV way too wide, IMO. No ATSC tuner. This one, I believe.

I HATE BEST BUY's return policy antics. They say you can return stuff within certain timeframes and guidlines, but then hassle you even when you fall within the guideline! They are morons, and have horrible cust. serv.

On the open box tip, BB usually sells OB products for retail - 10% as stated, and will not negotiate on that, unless in extremely poor condition merch. Circuit City on the other hand has much better OB pricing, and if you get the right manager, you can get them to knock it down a few more bucks, especially if you offer to buy their extended service (which you can return within 30 days if you didnt intend on buying it, while keeping the OB price that the mgr. gave you).

Make sure to tell the sales guy that if he'll take a little more off you'll spring for all the warranty and extra "gold Plated" cable crap. Then just return the warranty and cables later. Fvck Best Buy.

I went to the BB today in Louisville and all of their open box TVs were gone. I guess it must have been quite a sale - half of the shelf space where they normally keep the 32 to 36 inch tubes were empty.
