I was on a 64 bit site and they were saying that maybe cotton candy would be out first.
It looks the same but more refined, its more of a usb stick with usb on one end and hdmi

RP is aiming to produce an ultra-cheap device for charitable uses, so the hardware is the bare minimum required to do anything. hmm i wonder if this will be decent enough tojust surf the web on a tv on.

its basically a roku 2 LT/XD/XDS for the most part. same cpu, same ram (256mb) and with ethernet vs wifi.

so i suppose its not THAT cheap given a roku is $50. but i like that you can do whateve ryou want with it, will be a fun thing to experiment with.

the cotton candy is much more impressive honestly. i mean the difference in hardware here is like, the difference between say an original droid and a droid razr .

the broadcom cpu in the rasperri can decode 1080p though so it supposedly has a fairly decent gpu but the arm11 core on there is not super fast. at least with the cotton candy you know itll be able to say run a browser etc at a reasonable speed given its basically got similar hardware to something like a razr /galaxy nexus. i can't see it being nearly as cheap though, probably $100

No, it's not out yet. Should be out next month, and then it'll be on sale for $25/$35.

And of course the Cotton Candy specs are more impressive...it's got a totally different target audience. The Rasperri is for everyone, especially educational purposes in parts of the world that don't have access to better computers. The Cotton Candy is for enthusiasts like us.
 
I imagine if you take a tablet and take away the display and the battery you end up with a bill of materials about $50. The only thing that surprises me is that one of the big android tablet makers doesnt take one of their cheap tablets, remove the screen, and release it as a special SKU that serves this market. (ie a screenless tablet with some sort of general purpose I/O interface)
 
For $35, I can get a bunch of them, run Ethernet everywhere, and control everything in my house. Oh god, so many options..

this is what i REALLY wanted to do too with these. i imagined every room having its own raspberry pi, with as many various sensors and controls that i want for each room. also, make network ip cameras that would be fully customizable to your setup. sky is the limit at these prices... i actually think if you could write a good enough software program you could potentially start a smart-home business that utilizes all these cheap parts... budget smart home installs would be HUGE money i would imagine.

and ethernet isnt even necessary if youre lazy... it could all be done wireless
 
I was going to waste my money on something else I didn't need, but now I'm going to save it and get one of these little things. Would be awesome for watching movies in my room on a small TV or monitor.

It is also targeting 2H2012 (so 6+ months later) and apparently the makers are shooting for sub-$200. The "sub-$200" leaves a lot of leeway, but implies it'll probably be at least 4 times (and maybe 5 times) what even the more expensive Raspberry will go for...

cotton candy seems nice for specific applications that would require somewhat intensive cpu power... but "sub $200" usually means 199.99 so at that price you could buy a atom or e350 netbook and hook that to your tv or whatever... the only thing cotton candy would have over a real pc then would be its size and power consumption.

rasberry pi is FAR more awesome because it can still do 1080p video for anyone's budget. i would also imagine the amount of apps that will be written specifically for the raspberry pi will be massive... this really is a modder's dream component. i myself have been wanting cheap SoC's for many years now. this anticipation is just killing me now, even though i know as soon as i get one there wont be a lot of software for it anyway (am im not a programmer!)

just being able to turn cheap internet webcams into ip-enabled smart cams for $25 is unbelievable to me! i cant wait to start building weird yet totally awesome gadgets!
 
Now add in the endless mods that the PI can be associated with and what products/applications Larger companies can come up with. It is quite overwhelming to think of what may be possible.

Since the first computer was ever crafted we have been moving along at a pretty good pace in the Technology arena of the human race. I think this is the beginning of the next stage of our rapid technology advancement/development . Smart devices everywhere making life better for us and helping lesser nations develop things that would never have been possible before. Schools all over the world can teach the true universal language of our world. Programming. Mind boggling
