24X Lite-On vs. 24x Lite-On

I am interested in buy a Lite On 24x10x40 CD-RW As I have heard they can do the SD2 games and all the 24X I have seen are w/ Burnproof but now I see a 24X Lite On with Smart Burn.

Whats up with that? Which one does SD2?
thx

i'm looking at a retail-box of a LITEON 24x right now, and there i read SMARTBURN as you mentionned, but from personal experience i can assure you that that means BURNPROOF, i guess that has something to do with licensing.

<< As I have heard they can do the SD2 games >>

from my understanding, the only drive that can do it is the plextor 12/10/32 w/firmware 1.04 (mine 😉 )

look in the upper right of your post... the paper with the arrow icon will subscribe you.

Here is a thread with some interesting insight

LQQK

ALSO I have seen Lite-On 24 Retail packaging with both the Smartburn and Burnproof (not together though=)

ANyone have a SMARTBURN drive>?
DOes it work?
Does it work well?

I thought any of the drives on this list with a dot under "correct EFM encoding of regular bit patterns" would copy SD2.

<< it can burn sd2 (I have one and have done it 🙂 ) ; although sd2 has been cracked now, so it really doesn't matter. >>

People, please, what IS SD2? Acronymically challenged...

<< SafeDisc2 is the copy protection of choice for new games. It makes it difficult to make your legally allowable backup easily. >>

How can you tell if a disk has it? I have these 3 games:

Deus Ex (not the Game of the Year version)
Max Payne
Alice

Haven't tried copying these yet with my Creative 8-4-32E CD-RW

I just gave it a shot. Max Payne and Alice could not be read (using Nero 5.535). I successfully copied Deus Ex, but that was an older game, so I guess they didn't have whatever copy protection is lousing up my backups. SD2?

Are you using clonecd to burn the games? You should give it a try. I'm using 24x Lite-On with smart burn right now, nero recognize it as Burn-proof and it work perfectly.

I went to the CloneCD website link above in this thread to see about my drive's compatibility. It said it would work with CloneCD (presumably on SD2 disks) if I had firmware 1.07 or greater for my Creative 8-4-32E CD-RW. Well, I've had that firmware update for a while but hadn't applied it because I'm using my new Win2k Pro system, and the update only works on Win9x systems. Soooo, I ripped the CD-RW and my old HD that I now use for backups and reference out of my new Win2k box and put them in my old box. That HD boots to Win95b, so I flashed the BIOS and put the components back in my Win2k box. However, I still can't copy Max Payne, and won't even bother trying to copy Alice. It was worth a try, and I was hoping the new firmware would quiet down this Creative drive, which is torture. I'm leaning more and more to getting a new CD-RW. Guess it's the Plextor or the Lite-on. Seen many more votes for the Lite-on 24, so I guess I'll go with that. I'm a little confused about this thread, though. Are there two different versions of the Lite-on 24x or is that just a packaging issue?

<< there is only one vers of the 24x right now >>

Good news to me. However, going to www.pricewatch.com I see that there are evidently Retail version and OEM. Some mention Nero included, others mention audio and data cables. Is all this in the retail box? Differences?
