So I picked up one of those QPS 24x10x40 drives at
CompUSA the other week (rebadged Sanyo BP1500, indentical to TDK
24x10x40 drive)...I whipped out my "trusty" CompUSA generia CD blanks
and copied a test disc (Win98SE install disc, in fact). Seemed to
copy OK. Next I copied a music CD (Patty Smythe's greatest hits,
in fact) onto one of those PNY 16x rated discs...That seemed to copy
OK, too. (By seeming to copy OK, I mean they copied without reported
error, and when I reinserted them they were recognized and spun up
properly).
HOWEVER, upon further testing, both discs are riddled with errors and
useless...
So I guess you really NEED to use 24x rated media...Drat...A good reason
not to use a 24x burner (or else to use it in 16x mode)...
