I can't answer the OP question directly, but that 'reset to device' error is one I expect to see with a dodgy storage device. I can't remember the last time I encountered a dodgy SATA port. The nearest problem I've encountered IIRC was with a couple of models of ASUS AMD boards (M4A78T-E and M4A89GTD/PRO USB3) in IDE mode. I don't remember the precise details but the boards didn't like it if storage devices were plugged into certain combinations of port number, like 1 & 2 or 1 & 3. I encountered this on multiple boards of the same model. Switching one device to another port did the trick, or switching to AHCI mode.
