Ah, I think you typo'd in the OP: you mentioned Windows 10, then when I asked about you mentioning Windows 10, you started talking about Windows 7 :)

Isn't Microsoft's opinion regarding Skylake support pretty much irrelevant? I'm pretty sure that MS doesn't design drivers for Intel hardware as a general rule. Would it even matter if MS refused to approve WHQL Intel drivers for Win7 (which I doubt they would do as they're not in the habit of pissing off Intel)?

Is MS somehow "supporting" my parents' ancient nforce 5 chipset Vista box? Did they ever?

To my understanding of the situation, it's a complete non-story, and the real story (if there's one at all) is "MS continues to throw FUD to discourage users from running Win7".

You're right, that was a typo.

The impression I got was that Microsoft was going to actively deny updates (OS updates) to Windows 7 systems that it detected running Skylake after 2017 (now 2018 with the confusing "security" updates exceptions).

Do you mean drivers delivered through WU, or WU in general? Either way it makes little sense IMO. Why not any previous generation of Intel hardware? Why not include present or past AMD hardware?

Some citations would definitely be needed, and not some clueless journalist's interpretation of something vague that a MS spokesperson said.
