I have some servers in my unfinished basement that have been running 24/7 since I got the house, other than short down time during a UPS upgrade/rewiring/relocation a few years back. I'd be scared to see how bad it looks inside of them. Probably not that bad though.
My next goal for my server room is building the air handler unit (which will have hepa filters) and then enclosing the room. Then dust wont be so much an issue.
Occasionally I vacuum the front of the servers to clear the worse of it.
When I took over the computer duties in the office my wife managed, I got a huge surprise. I had her bring the computer home at the end of the work day for a cleanup using my air compressor at home. I figured it would be pretty dirty inside after several years of running. The office had two cats and one of her co-workers brought her dog to work everyday so I anticipated a lot of pet hair.
What I didn't expect was the dust from the back half of the space that was rented out to a guy running a custom woodworking business. The computer was packed full of fine powdery sawdust. I actually removed the PS and took the cover off and you could not see one single component inside of it. It was entirely blanketed inside. This was before the days of fans in Power Supplies but there was a path through the PS that had air being drawn through it.
The computer ran fine both before and after. It was hard to believe that it wasn't overheating.
