The backlight will burnout quicker. What I would do if I couldn't fix it with software is build a lever on the bottom of the bezel. Press the lever, and it presses the button on the back.

Too late to return for a nexus 7? Does daydream run at default brightness? Maybe use taskr to drop it to min brightness when daydream is on.

Also a white background is least stressing to an lcd screen right? Maybe try a combination of all white background + min brightness when not in active use.

Using the original N7 with a pogo dock as bedside clock. Stays on 24/7 running daydream clock. There are 2 options for brightness, regular & nightmode(dim)

I's be concerned it'd be a fire hazard, can you just silicone glue it to your refrigerator to reduce the danger?

The tablet components & chargers aren't exactly premium or industrial strength :)
