2405FPW's USB ports always on? Or, they turn off when LCD sleeps?

I'm getting the Wacom Intuos3 6"x8" tablet and pen due to right pinky repetitive injury from mouse. Don't have it yet. Was told that i cannot use the 2405's USB ports IF they turn off when the LCD screen sleeps.

May I ask if anyone knows if the 2405's USB ports are similar to other older Dell LCD's when they turn off whenever the LCD's go to sleep mode/standby mode. I'd have to pull out the table's USB plug in the Dell LCD, plug it back in again when the LCD wakes up, and have Windows XP recognize the device again, EACH and every time the LCD goes to sleep mode. Clearly not a workable solution, even though the USB ports on the LCD are VERY well located for great convenience.

Any knowledge/experience with the 2405's USB ports' performance and working parameters would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Hey Buddy,
The ports are always on when the monitor is on. I have my printer and keyboard/mouse routed throught the monitor, and the only time they go off is when I physically turn on the unit using the front power button. In sleep mode everything (USB and integrated card reader) continues to funtion normally.

EVen if the monitor is off, the ports stay on.

I have a USB powered lit mouse pad, and it's ALWAYS ON, regardless if the power is on for the LCD.

I have dual 2005FPWs....

Mr Burrbaby and Mr. Mackie2k:

Thanks for your postings. I finally received and got to try out my tablet/pen. Yes, the ports work exactly as you said. Though Mr. Mackie2k, i have not yet tried to see if the USB ports are on even if the front power switch is turned off, which, according to Mr. Burrbaby and the Specs on dell's page, the usb ports would be off when the front switch is off.

This is correct, at least with the Dell 2001fp, the USB ports are off when the monitor is off (power button pushed, not sleep mode). I have not tried it yet with my 2005fpw as I have not run out of USB ports yet.

what was interesting for me was that i thought to myself, why would i need usb ports in my monitor?!? but, shortly after i got the 2405, i decided to plug in the usb cable to my computer, and used 1 usb port on the monitor for my tablet/pen, then another for my camera, and now, there are still 2 usb ports left! what an awesome idea and what an awesome monitor? hooray! :) these tablets DO take time to get used to! but they seem very accurate.

there are concerns that usb hubs, even the powered ones, have issues when certain more demanding peripherals are connected to them: i.e. Maxtor external hardrives, cameras, keyboard/mice...

i worried about this, as i have way too many things to fit on the usb ports in the back of my tower, even though i have a pci usb port card.

yet, i was fortunate in that i purchased the "right" hub, the 7-port belkin, which has widely been said to be fine, and it is. going from the belkin to the dell is yet another "layer" (i know usb is supposed to be able to be daisy chained, but you know how things are, they can say one thing and practically, it's another matter). well, so far, one digital cam is doing fine, and the tablet/pen is also doing fine! ;)

I use my core USB ports (on mobo and pci bracket) for more demanding connections like my camera and nomad zen touch mp3 player and use the USB hub for things like my memory card reader and USB cam...

Kinda strange, I have 10 USB ports (not counting my monitor) and when I hook up my flash drive all 10 are being used...

too bad the ports on the 2005 are on the RIGHT side of the monitor, so if it is the left monitor of a dual monitor setup (as it usually is, since the primary monitor is usually on the left), then the ports get kind of obstructed by the other monitor.

mmm, Mr. tren001, how would u know what the 2005 is going to be used for, either the primary or the secondary? according to your needs, maybe the usb ports should be somewhere at the bottom towards the center, with some sort of wire management so you don't see the wires! right?
