Is it offline for a few minutes after the PRINTER is booted? Or after the computer is booted?

For the former, it is likely an issue on Brothers side. Possibly it takes a couple of minutes after the printer is booted for it to actually be able to accept print commands, even if the web interface is accessible.

I was looking at a networked Epson laser printer today, for some bizarre reason Epson's NetPort thingie had stopped working, so I set it up with a static IP on the network and added a TCP/IP port entry in Printer Properties for Windows to print to it.

I'd try that here to see if it makes any difference. Alternatively it could be some bizarre routing/DNS issue (if the Brother software uses DNS of course).

If your printer has WSD turn it off or turn off the service in Windows so your printer port doesn't change from TCP/IP to WSD when WSD printer gets detected.
