24-pin psu... Hack it up?

I have a 24 pin powers supply but my motherboard needs a 20 pin power supply. Can I Just hack off the 4 extra pins on the left? Will that work or am I going to fry my motherboard?

I paid 25$ for the psu (replacement for a p.o.s 800mhz system)... Is it worth another $15 to get a converter? If I can get it working for free that'd be cool tho.

You can also just let the extra four pins hang off the end, if there's room...

I could do that but I'd have to sand the 3rd and 4th pin housings to make it fit. Sounds better than using a saw.

should work..however if this a new PSU i would worry about the warranty....you can always get an adapter 24p - 20p.

Also...20pin standard MIGHT require the -5V line (usually white) (depends on your motherboard if the mobo needds the -5 which 24pin PSUs mostly don't use anymore..... but in general i'd say removing the 4 connectors should work.
