24-pin power supply to 20-pin motherboard?

I'm trying to fix an old(er) computer and it looks like there are power issues, so I decided to try out a new power supply first.

The power supply has 24-pins to plug into the motherboard, but the motherboard only has 20-pins. Do I need an adapter or are some pins just not used?

Thanks.

I have 20 pin power supply. I got an adapter to convert in to 24 pin. I am not sure if there is 24 pin to 20 pin converter. Check in frys. it might help you.

That's a clear maybe. Technically you don't, you just leave the extra four pins hanging free. But that's also where trouble may hide ... if the mainboard has components close to that end of the 20-pin connector, you'll be physically unable to plug the 24-pin plug there. And then you do need an adapter.

I have a 24pin in an old 20 pin P4 board and I just have the extra 4 pins hanging off. Peter is right, as long as there's nothing touching the extra 4 pins you should be ok. I've had mine that way for about 8 months now and its been fine.

Align pin 1, leave pins 21-24 unconnected.

Plug orientation is obvious from the retention clip and notch, pin 1 should be marked or at least shown in the manual.
