24 pin power supply question

So I've got an Antec TruePower 450w PS and it has a 20 pin connector with the extra 4 pin connector. I know all the new mbs require a 24 pin connector. I'm just trying to save myself a couple bucks, is it possible to use my current PS with a new mb? Or do I need to shell out some extra cash.

Most, if not all, mobos that have a (EATX/EPS12V) 24-pin socket will work just fine off a 20-pin plug. There is a slight potential for extra heat at the contacts, but it's spread over several wires. The 20-pin connector will only go in one way w/o forcing. Avoid adapters or extenders in high-current circuits whenever possible.

Since the latches probably won't line up, there will be no latching. So you might want to tack the connector in place with some hot glue (wipe the outside surfaces of the shells with some alcohol so it will adhere well) - the hot glue will peel right off when the time comes you need to unplug.

What he said. It might latch, I know my board had the notch for the latch all the way across the plug.

Yea, it should latch down fine. Sometimes the latch is wide enough to catch it. I just installed a motherboard for my brother that has a 24 pin connector and a extra 4 pin connector. But his psu had a 4 pin and a 20 pin. I used the 20 on the 24....and the 4 on the 4. Has worked perfect for over a week now.
