I ended up grabbing the Samsung 245BW for several reasons (mostly my twitch gaming), but another reason I chose it was because I found it at Costco for $400. I have had too many LCD's from online retailers come with a "few" dead/stuck pixels. It gave me great peace of mind to know I could exchange/return my new monitor even if there were less than 6-8 bad pixels.

BTW, I love this monitor. You will have to calibrate it out of the box (default brightness is way too high, minor gamma tweaks). But I'm getting excellent color reproduction now. The response time is incredible. It's hard to describe. With a High DPI mouse, my gaming has never felt so smooth on any previous LCD. The only thing about this monitor that you have to be careful of is the hight adjustment. You need your eye level to be at or slightly above the top of the screen. Otherwise, you will get color variation due to the limited viewing angle.

I also went with this one and am waiting for my bro to ship it to me. Have you tried the portrait mode yet ?

245BW doesn't have portrait mode, unless you've ripped off the stand & mounted it to some kind of LCD arm.

And you never want a TN in portrait mode.
I can tolerate TNs in landscape, even though i don't like them.

I use a 204B in portrait though, & it's not possible to not see color shifting.

I doubt many would use 24" WS in portrait anyway though, since it's almost too high.

245BW does have portrait mode because it uses the same stand as the 245T, you just have to unscrew it and remove a screw that stops the stand from pivoting. Samsung just didn't announce this function in the 245BW to avoid complaints because of the viewing angles.

I know that TNs, especially this big aren't suitable for portrait use, I just wanted someone to share if it's really that awful, I'm just curious...

As for the size, and maybe you're right it's almost too high which raises the question why do most brands make this function available from 22" and above...

I have not tried to use portrait on this yet, but I might try it out if I can hack it. :)

It certainly does appear to be a P-MVA though, & the 6ms (not 5 or 2) is just like the response time other *VAs get rated as.

I'd assume it's an MVA, but for absolute certainty i'd want to see it myself or hear from someone who has...

Yeah my logic is the same about the specs - I hope they're correct :) I even e-mailed ViewSonic and asked them if it's a VA or TN, 6 or 8 bit etc ... I'm hoping for a positive answer though the design of the unit sucks with the thick besel with it's even thicker bottom and ugly stand :frown:

Yeah the Viewsonic is actually what brought me to this thread. I can't seem to find any info about whether it's a TN or not. The egg has it for $359 shipped.

But man, that stand and bezel are fugly.

That's what I said mate, the monitor is ugly .. As for the panel, I think there's no way to really tell - the specs suggest it's a *VA - 178/178 or 176/176 (on VS site) viewing angles and 6ms rt. However the price isn't that of a VA especially for a ViewSonic monitor. I wnet for the Samsung and will make a short review when I get it.

Hey gang,
I just got my Sammy 245BW !
I have seen the LG 24" non TN (forgot the model) and can say I'm very impressed with my new Samsung - It gives a similar IQ, very vivid colors, and the whole viewing angle shit is so over spoken !! I think it's a great monitor overall and I'm very happy with it.
Can somebody reccomend a good calibration software, I wanna get the most of this monitor but I'm not willing to spend the money for a calibrator..
Thanks guys

why couldn't I ? I'm sure I could tho there's no sense in doing it ... I don't say viewing angles are like those on S-IPS, don't get me wrong :D I just think for $380 bucks it's worth the money, Ive seen many 24" TNs and this is by far the best one. Not everyone has the money to buy a 2690WUXi, right.

So, again does anyone know a good calibration software to recommend ? And keep your comments about TNs to you, don't wanna hear them - viva 3007-HC, 2690WUXi and FP241W, TNs are crap, we must burn them, aight ?
