24" LCD color issue

Hi. I just picked up the $200 monitor deal from Buy.com (HP Rebranded, Samsung manufactured) the other day and it worked fine for a couple of days. However, a color issue has just presented itself. On images where there are shades (where the color changes gradually from one to another) there are these thin lines colored red/green/blue while any solid colors show up nice and clean. It makes it look grainy and was wondering how I might fix this. This is what I've tried:

Updating video card drivers
Using DVI-VGA converter (monitor doesn't have a DVI port)
Reinstalling monitor drivers (fixed the issue the first time... I'll elaborate later)
Resetting all settings on the monitor

I had this issue the first time I plugged in the monitor, but was promptly solved by a quick and simple monitor driver install. I'm wondering if anyone has any ideas. I'd prefer to not have to return it, but we'll see. Thanks!!

EDIT: I was wondering if using a DVI-to-HDMI converter might resolve the issue? I'm wondering if it's a matter of "noise" through VGA. Any thoughts?
