24 inch monitor and finding a video card to cope

I am currently in the market to get an entirely new PC. My main focus at the moment is the video card it is an area I am willing to spend a bit extra on as I have a 24 inch monitor and would ideally like to run things at a respectable resolution.

As things stand now I view the video card market as a bit of a mess and its going to take a lot of wading through useless cards to find the best bang for my buck I think.

Does anyone have any recommendations at this current time for a card that may fit my needs?

Also is there anything on the horizon I should look out for in the next month or two?

Okay, first what "things" are you planning on running? At what resolutions? (what is native res. of your 24"?)

Native res is 1920x1200. Looking at gaming and watching movies for the most part. I'd like to have a card that has no problems buffering Blu Ray quality video. I do all my work on my PC as well but that comes down to word processing and Skype.

new video cards coming out in less than 4 weeks, so wait at least 2 or 3 weeks for some reviews before deciding.

4850/4870 from ATI and GTX 280/260 from nVidia are expected to launch mid-June so benchmarks from reputable sources should be released about a week before that (once NDA lifts).

If nothing else, these new cards on the market will drive down the prices of existing cards further.

Good to know. Is the word that these cards are going to be new flagships/highend or mid range?

ATI 4870 will be highend, not flagship (though it may even compete with the GX2, supposedly) with a dual gpu design coming out later (August?). Nvidia GTX 280 is flagship though and will be released June 18th.

Well rumour has it the that the 4870 which will (supposedly) be faster than the 9800GTX will be retailing around 250$ - 279$.

It would be really cool to actually have a choice at launch to go mid to very high end, even if this means your choice of vendor is limited at the very high end.

In the mean time lower details a bit. I'm running a X1950pro with my LG245WP and still managing with current (not Crysis) titles.
