24 inch IPS or 27 inch TN?

Here is a general question. Would you rather have a 24 inch IPS or a 27 inch TN panel for gaming and surfing the internet?

24" IPS. Expanded viewing angles is always nice. I usually notice color shifting even on 24" screens, so on a 27" it would probably be even worse. Which screen is it?

Thee dell has a 8 bit color panel, 10 bit color processing, 102% NTSC RGB (98% Adobe RGB) colorspace. With the correct .icc color correction profile and DeltaE can be dropped down to an average of .2 or .3 making it incredibly accurate (http://www.tftcentral.co.uk/reviews/dell_u2410.htm http://www.tftcentral.co.uk/articles/icc_profiles.htm).

Responsiveness is good and input latency can be very good (below average 34ms in normal mode, but good 14ms in gamer mode).

There is really no contest, a high end, outstanding dell panel versus some random viewsonic TN, U2410 all the way.

So people don't care about having a bigger screen for gaming?

There is no question here, especially with the fact both would be the same resolution.

Obviously the IPS.

Life is better without garbage panels.

It also has same resolution and bigger pixels, so appears more jagged.

I'd take any IPS over any TN. Hell, cheapest (with smallest size) IPS is probably costs as much as most expensive TN. If that does not tell everything, I don't know what does.

The viewsonic is 1920x1080 16:9 and the Dell is 1920x1200 16:10

^ All the more reason to take the Dell. Unless you're planning to also use the monitor as a living room TV then there's literally no reason to take the Viewsonic.

For desktop use, a larger monitor just becomes a liability a some point. That especially applies when it has a lower resolution than the smaller monitor; not to mention a worse panel.

I really_really prefer 1920x1200 over 1920x1080, to the point where I'd take a TN 1920:1200 over an IPS 1920:1080.

1080p is arse in my book. I'm looking forward to finally getting a 2560x1600 screen soon.

I currently own a Samsung PX2370 (TN) and it's actually a really good monitor for gaming (minimal motion blur, 3 ms input lag) AND has great color accuracy based on multiple reviews (2.3 avg. deltaE w/ factory settings).

However most of the time color accuracy & TNs don't mix (especially w/ factory settings) so im not sure how well a Viewsonic 27" fares here...

Also the viewing angles on a TN are fairly narrow, it's not a big deal on this 23" although borderline, so im not sure how annoying it would be on a 27" screen.

I might have to agree with the IPS majority vote based on choices given.

A dell u2410 or a viewsonic 27 inch..

A 24" 16:10 has almost the same screen area as a 27" 16:9 - if you were choosing between a U2711 or a U2410 you could argue that you needed MOAR pixels, but in this case get the Dell and don't look back.

This exactly. 16:9 @ 1920x1080 is cramped compared to 16:10 @ 1920x1200, but 16:9 @ 2560x1440 is a nice improvement. Good mix of vertical real estate for productivity, and a nice wide screen for gaming.

The OP already has a U2410, which is s decent 24" screen. Dell has 30% off sales pretty often on the U2711, bringing it down to ~$900 shipped (even after my high WA state sales tax). My advice would be to stick with the U2410 until he can save up enough to buy a real 27" or 30" IPS panel instead of a cheap 16:9 TN.

Everyone keeps talking about viewing angles...REALLY?

How far away are you guys sitting from your monitors?

99.5% of the time I am sitting at my desk looking DEAD straight on at the monitor, from 26" away, how do viewing angles come into play?

The bigger the better if you ask me...

Oh crap. My monitor budget just had to go up another $180. o_O

Most people here will say IPS >>>>>>>>>> TN all day long. I would have to agree. Would I choose a 24 TN over a 17 IPS, sure. But a 24 to 27 isnt a HUGE leap, and the IPS is such a better picture.

Check out the 32LG450. I really don't understand why more people aren't excited about this thing. Other than having deal with a panel lottery (both myself and a coworker ordered from Amazon and got the correct panel) you're getting a 32" IPS for much cheaper than any computer lcd. I have mine sitting next to a 2707WFP I paid about a grand for a couple years ago, and the picture is every bit as good, if not better. For a little over $400, no other computer monitor on the market can come close to this performance. There's a huge thread over on the AVS forums, check that out for more info.

These sets are fine as a monitor for gaming but the pixels are too big for text. You have a 32" with 1920 x 1080 resolution, its just not going to be as good for text.

Viewing angles are not about distance, they are about angle. When I'm at work I generally view the screen head on, but at home I like to be a little more relaxed. I might actually want to recline a bit, prop my feet up on the sub, and still see the screen.

IPS all the way, the color representation of the TN and its blacks leaves a lot to be desired. I own an P-MVA monitor which has slightly worse color quality than IPS and yet, I couldn't go back to TN. The whites looks so yellowish and the blacks so gray with a TN panel.
