So one of my relatives is about to buy a brand new vehicle - 2011 Toyota sedan

The price - $xx,xxx (LESS THAN 20K)
Sale tax - $x,xxx
Title,license, etc - $236

Is it ($236) expensive or reasonable? I haven't buy a new vehicle for a while and I am not sure that amount is good or bad. TIA.

Depends on the state and the price of the car. I don't remember the exact numbers but in CA, it's about 2.25%. But it's CA. Might be random environment taxes crap in there.

If you were in MN it would be double that. For a new vehicle, that's not bad really. It was probably more of a pain to write the tax check.

If they think that's expensive, wait till they sees the "Dealer Prep Fee".. $500 for them to wash and vacuum the car.

That's not that bad...and it's not like it's negotiable...if you buy the car, you pay the DMV fees.

Title costs are fixed by the State.

Notary is just a profit item that the dealer is tacking on.

You should be able to take the sales paperwork to the DMV/MVA andpay them for the title and tags/plates.

Some dealers have started charging $300-500 for an extra profit fee (handling) after the sale is accepted. Make sure that they do not try to do that. Let them know that the price is the final price with the exception of any government fees.

Yes, they will. Just bought a new car with the wife and the dealer tried to throw in a $299 "Processing Fee". When asked about it, was told that all dealers do it and the price varies by dealer. I told them that I've never seen that before and they insisted that it has been there for decades. In the end, I did not pay the fee to buy the car. It's a crock of shit to get more money while "posing" as an official fee.

yep, just another BS way for them to get some money. I've always had it removed successfully so far, but some times they do it as another reduction on the vehicle price or increase in trade in to make it seem like they didn't fold in this instance.

ours is 399.....i do a half assed job that takes me 15 minutes and costs the company less than 20 dollars in both water, electric, and supplies.

its really pathetic, but you can squirrel your way out of paying that dealer prep fee....

The processing fee started up in the late 1990s.

Most people finance their vehicles and also have the dealer do the legwork for the paperwork.

It was a way for the dealer to recoup those costs from overhead; but it turned into extra profit potential.

Last three vehicles that I purchased (2 new, 1 used)they claimed that they needed that fee for the accounting.

Fine - instead of $25K for the vehicle - the offer price went down to $24.5K and you get the $399 processing fee.

They took it.

On the others - I told them what I was going to pay as agreed, no financing and here was the bank check.

One accepted; the other complained.
I stated that everytime I come back in that door; the check will be smaller by $100 and started walking.

did the same thing last time i bought my car..

$35,000 paid in "cash" ... they tried to add a $400 prep fee. I asked them if they really wanted to explain to their home office why they lost a $35,000 sale over a $400 fee.

So they knocked the "fee" off the price of the car, for 'bookkeeping' purposes..

Thanks to all that replied.

CC - interesting, did not know that you could go to the DMV and do tittle and stuffs.

Don't worry about other fees. I already emailed the dealers:

1. Price of the vehicle.
2. Sale tax.
3. Tittle/license and ALL fees upfront.
4. NOTHING ELSE. No dealer prep fee, no carpet guard super duper package. Nothing.
5. TOTAL price from 1-3.

Look like $236 is reasonable. Thanks again guys/gals.

Those sound like dealer handling fees. I bought a toyota matrix last sat and I will pay the tax/license fee in 5-6 weeks when I go to the dmv to replace the paper temp plate with a metal one.
