I posted this over at toms too...

So here's the deal, my friend and I are planning on building a new gaming rig. Summer is almost over for us and we have like a month left till school... so he's hoping to order by the end of this week, build it next week, and enjoy the last moments gaming since his laptop sucks.

We're novices when it comes to computers, but we did some research and came up with these parts:
$2300 Wishlist
Also, he hasn't updated his list yet... so heres what we're aiming for:

Monitor: SAMSUNG 226BW 22" 2 ms $320
Keyboard: Saitek Eclipse II $55
Mouse: Logitech G5 $46
Speakers: Logitech X-230 $32

Case: Antec Performance One $130
PSU: SILVERSTONE OP650 $140
Mobo: ABIT IP35 Pro $185
CPU: e6750 $235 (hope it goes down)
HSF: ARCTIC COOLING Freezer 7 $35
RAM: 2x G.skill 2gb (4gb total) $260
VGA: 8800gts 640 $380
SC: X-Fi XtremeGamer $91
HDD: SAMSUNG SpinPoint T 500GB $110
CD: Sony NEC Optiarc $18
DVD: LITE-ON DVD burner $32
FDD: MITSUMI $20

OS: Vista 64-bit Premium $115

Total (no combos, rebates) = $2204

We'll oc, but not now since it isn't needed because he mainly WoW. We'll probably boost the ram up some...
We'll probably bump up the CPU during winter also when the new games come up, so what would be a good HSF other than the artic 7 at that price range? The ultra-120 looks sweet but too costly.

2900XT or 8800GTS 640? He won't SLI/Crossfire. Again he'll mainly play WoW, with some occasional CoH, BF2, DoD/CS:S

As for sound card and speaker... what would you guys recommend as we have no clue what to get. He listens to music alot, and occasionally watch some movies... I read vista drivers suck so advices would be helpful

And the PSU, theres a combo with the case, the Antec True Power Trio 550 www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817371002. Is that good enough for future upgrades?

Budget is $2300 and shipping is about $80 so try to keep it under $2220
*also we'll probably order the cpu elsewhere if the price stays like that

Thanks

When you spend $2300 on a PC and it doesn't include a 8800 GTX something just isn't right :)
MSI 8800 GTX is $499 before rebate so we need to save $119 in order to get it, let's see:

Get Gigabyte Ga-p35-ds3r instead, same performance, $55 saved, $64 to go.
Crucial has a $45 rebate on their 2GB kits right now, price before the rebate is $125, $14 to go.
Floppy drive? This isn't 1997 :D, now you have a 8800 GTX and $6 extra saved.
PSU, Get a Corsair 620HX instead for $10 more, it's the best their is at this price range.
For an extra $4 you get a 8800 GTX and one of the best PSU's ever made.

Rest looks fine.
Good luck.

Ahh ty ty! I'll definately tell him to change the monitor to the Acer, the ram to the crucial, ip35 to ds3r, the psu to cosair
what about the bluegears b-Enspirer soundcard?...the reviews say its vista stable
I think ill stick with the gts, for the games he play isn't really heavy and it'll saves him some $$. Next year or in two year he could use the step up program and upgrade to the newer better cards
Thank again everyone
